There is a saying that “batsmen win you games, bowlers win you tournaments”. This theory has got backing from IPL, where bowlers have also played a huge role in the success of the team. In IPL, the bowlers who pick most wickets in the tournament take home the purple cap. In this article, we will look at the list of bowlers, who have won the purple cap in the biggest cricket league.
1. 2008 Purple Cap- Sohail Tanvir (22 wickets)
The first season of the IPL was the only season in which they allowed players from Pakistan. Very few gave a chance to Rajasthan Royals before the tournament but they proved everyone wrong. Sohail Tanvir played a huge role in the success as he took 22 wickets.
2. 2009 – RP Singh (23 wickets)
While Deccan Chargers finished last in the first season, they came back strongly in the second. RP Singh played a huge part in India’s success in the 2007 World Cup. The left-arm also played a starring role in Deccan Chargers triumph by picking 23 wickets.

3. 2010 – Pragyan Ojha(23 wickets)
When IPL started, a lot of pundits feared that spinners will struggle but they were wrong. Pragyan Ojha became the first spinner to win the purple cap in the 2010 edition.
4. 2011 – Lasith Malinga (28 wickets)
Lasith Malinga is one of the best bowlers in the history of T20 cricket. He won the purple cap in 2011, and in doing so, also broke the record of most wickets in a single season of the league.
5. 2012 – Morne Morkel (25 wickets)
Morne Morkel played a huge role in the dominance of Delhi Daredevils, as the franchise finished 1st in the group stage. While DD failed to reach the final, Morkel made his mark by going home with the purple cap.
6. 2013 – Dwayne Bravo (32 wickets)
Dwayne Bravo is one of the best bowlers in the T20s, as his slower balls are almost impossible to pick. Bravo picked 32 wickets in 2013 to win the purple cap, and he also broke the record of most wickets in a season.
7. 2014 – Mohit Sharma (23 wickets)
Mohit Sharma had emerged from nowhere in the 2013 season. The CSK fast bowler proved that he is not a one-season wonder by performing well in 2014 too, and also walking away with the coveted cap.
8. 2015 – Dwayne Bravo (26 wickets)
Dwayne Bravo proved his worth to the franchise yet again. The CSK all-rounder became the first bowler to win the purple cap twice.
9. 2016 – Bhuvneshwar Kumar (23 wickets)
While Shikhar Dhawan and David Warner got the plaudits, Bhuvneshwar Kumar also played a big part in SRH’s first IPL title. The right-arm swing bowler troubled every batsman with his pin-point yorkers as he took 23 wickets.
10. 2017 – Bhuvneshwar Kumar (26 wickets)
The stock of Buvneshwar Kumar was high after his heroics in the 2016 season. In the 2017 season, his stocks rose further, as he became the first bowler to win the purple cap in the consecutive seasons.
11. 2018 – Andrew Tye (24 wickets)
Andrew Tye was a revelation with the ball in the 2018, but his team did not support him. While he won the purple cap, his team KXIP failed to qualify for the playoffs.
12. 2019 Purple Cap- Imran Tahir (26 wickets)
Imran Tahir became the first spinner since 2010 to win the purple cap. The South-African leg-spinner troubled every batsmen with his variations as he helped CSK in reaching the final.
