As per reports, ECB has approached some of the IPL franchises regarding their product ‘The Hundred’. It is well known that ‘The Hundred’ has failed to reach the viewers in the last few seasons. Be it the format, the unavailability of top stars or many other factors, the tournament is a failure. Now, if IPL franchises would invest in the teams, it would be a massive boost to the tournament. We cannot rule out this happening very soon. On that note, based on how franchises think and the decisions they have taken in the past, we have arrived at a theory on who could be the captains. Here, we take a look at the list of the likely captains if top IPL franchises invest in ECB’s ‘The Hundred’.
Chennai Super Kings – Moeen Ali
Yes, Moeen Ali is in the last few years of his career. However, CSK is a very loyal franchise. They take care of some players even after they have left their franchises.
Therefore, CSK might insist on Moeen Ali as the skipper for the tournament. He is anyways the current vice-captain of the side. As a local player, Moeen Ali adds terrific value and balance to the side. Since he also has captaincy experience, CSK might go for him.
Mumbai Indians – Ben Stokes
Mumbai Indians is one franchise that is very interested in big names. We have seen them do that in SA20 and ILT20, as well. Recently, they got some top names for MI New York, as well. Considering all these factors, they might go for the biggest name in England.
Stokes is currently not associated with any IPL franchise. Depending on how the recruitment process would be, MI might go for Stokes as the skipper.
Royal Challengers Bangalore – James Vince
RCB went for Faf du Plessis as the captain when everyone’s expectations were different. If they were to invest in ‘The Hundred’, expect a similar move.
James Vince has been a classy player in the domestic leagues across the globe. He is also a good skipper. Therefore, RCB could hire him as the skipper.
Kolkata Knight Riders – Jason Roy
Jason Roy is also one of the likely captains if top IPL franchises invest in ECB’s ‘The Hundred’. Like CSK, KKR is also a loyal franchise. They have some of the players operating for them in multiple tournaments.
Yes, Roy might not have sufficient experience as a leader. However, he has experience playing in the format and would have some brilliant minds around him. Hence, he could be their pick.
Rajasthan Royals – Jos Buttler
Jos Buttler plays for more than one franchise with the name ‘Royals’. The management of this franchise has an English connection and they could surely invest in the ‘The Hundred’.
England skipper Jos Buttler would be at the top of the list. The franchise likes the player and might go a long way in signing him.
Punjab Kings – Sam Curran
Sam Curran is a part of this list of the likely captains if top IPL franchises invest in ECB’s ‘The Hundred’. The youngster is touted to be a future skipper for England.
If PBKS gets a stake in ‘The Hundred’, their current player Sam Currran is likely to be a part of the equation. Jonny Bairstow is also an option here.
