West Indies opener banned for 4 years for violating doping laws

The left-handed West Indies opener John Campbell has been banned from playing any domestic or international cricket for a period of four years, as it has been found that he has violated the doping laws that are in place for athletes in Jamaica.

The ban on the West Indies opener has been imposed by Jamaica’s anti-doping commission and not by the anti-doping unit of ICC, but it is likely that Campbell, apart from not being allowed to play any cricket in the Caribbean, won’t be able to play outside the Caribbean either.

John Campbell, so far in his career, has been a test match specialist for West Indies. Although he is a flamboyant stroke player and has also played 6 One Day Internationals (ODIs), it’s in the test matches where Campbell has been a regular feature for West Indies and even in the most recent test series against Bangladesh this year, the southpaw opened the batting with the West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite.

In case any athlete violates the doping laws in place, what becomes vital for any agency imposing the ban is to determine if the consumption of the prohibited drug by the athlete was intentional or not and in the case of John Campbell, the Jamaica anti-doping commission has not found any evidence to suggest that the consumption of the prohibited drug by the athlete was unintentional.

The athletes these days, across all sports, are educated about certain drugs that are not supposed to be consumed, but despite that, there have been several dropping cases surfacing in recent times and quite a few players have coped with bans, with Campbell being the latest one.

Although John Campbell is only 29-year old at the moment, it might turn out to be a career-threatening blow for the West Indies opener.
