Former Australian cricketer and current Australia head coach Justin Langer has indirectly made it clear that young Will Pucovski is likely to wait for his Baggy Green debut. Will Pucovski was named in Australia’s 17-man squad for the all-important Test series against India. This was after he impressed one and all showing fantastic form in the Sheffield Shield, where he scored back-to-back double hundreds.
Will Pucovski has been so good that we cannot ignore him: Justin Langer
Although most of the XI for Australia is likely to remain the same as it was the last time they played Test cricket, Langer is happy that there are players in the squad who are pushing the experienced players in the XI with their consistent performances. Langer likes healthy competition in the team and thus is happy with the way Will Pucovski has performed.
“Pucovski’s been amazing hasn’t he, and that’s what we’re looking for. We want guys who are outside the team to bang so hard you can’t ignore them. And the fact is Will’s been so good, we can’t ignore him,” Justin Langer was quoted as saying by Fox Sports.
However, Langer made it clear that Australia would like to back Joe Burns alongside David Warner as both had made significant contributions at the top of the order last summer. Langer believes there is great understanding between the opening duo and that the Australian team management is likely to stick to that opening combination.
“That said, I’ve also been consistent with the messaging since last summer, the last time we played Test cricket, that we loved the combination of Joe Burns and David Warner. They have a real synergy, they work well together, have chemistry. So at this point, I’d say that will remain the same,” Justin Langer said.
