England defeated Australia by eight runs in the first T20I of the three-match T20I series. It was a brilliant game but there was a controversial moment in the 17th over of the chase. Matthew Wade seemed to obstruct the field but England did not appeal for it. Hence, Wade did not get out. Here, we take a look at how Twitter reacted as Matthew Wade purposefully obstructs the field and gets away with it.
A solid show by England
England is one of the favourites to win the 2022 T20 World Cup. They proved that by pulling off an incredible win over defending champions Australia. Batting first, Buttler and Hales stitched a partnership of 132 in just 11.2 overs. While Buttler made a 32-ball 68, Alex Hales ended with 84 runs from 51 deliveries. The other batters could not add much but England still reached a score of 208-6.
With the ball, England took the early wicket of Cameron Green and then struck regularly to hamper the progress of the Aussies. David Warner made a superb 73 off 44 balls but that was not enough to meet the target. In the end, Matthew Wade threatened to take the game away from England but some consistent death bowling helped the Englishmen claim an eight-run win.

With consistent wickets falling at the other end, it was important for Wade to stay on the crease. However, it appeared that he crossed the line in the 17th over. In the bowling of Mark Wood, Wade clearly obstructed the field but England did not appeal for the wicket. Wade could have easily been caught and there was also a chance for a runout. However, although Wade did not have his eyes completely on the ball, it seemed that he purposefully raised his left arm obstructing the movement of Mark Wood. Here is how Twitter reacted to the incident:

Matthew Wade avoids an "obstructing the field" call despite impeding Mark Wood's attempt to take a catch off his own bowling.
England opted not to appeal, saving the umpires a headache.
