The Indian Premier League has always been a carnival of a cricket tournament, giving the fans a good dosage of cricketing action, mixed with just the right amount of the ‘entertainment’. When it all began in the year 2008, many records and stats were set, which stand to date, even after a decade to be some of the most impressive numbers in the history of the tournament. Here’s a look at some interesting stats from IPL 2008.

Most Runs in IPL 2008:

The 2008 season of the Indian Premier League started off with a bang, as Brendon McCullum, hit a big century in the very first game of the tournament. But, at the end of it all, it was Shaun Marsh of the Kings XI Punjab who grabbed the ‘Orange Cap’, with 616 runs to his name in 11 matches, at a strike rate of 139.68 and average of 68.44.

Following him on the list was Gautam Gambhir, with 534 runs in 14 matches, and below Gautam was the Sri Lankan Legend, Sanath Jayasuriya, who had 518 runs to his name. The 4th and 5th spot was grabbed by Shane Watson and Graeme Smith of the season’s eventual winners, Rajasthan Royals. Watson played 15 games, while Smith played 11. The former managed to score 472 runs, and the latter ended his run with 441 runs besides his name.

Most Wickets in IPL 2008

The bowler with the most wickets in IPL 2008, was the Pakistani pacer, Sohail Tanvir of the Rajasthan Royals. In just the 11 games that he played in, he took 22 wickets, including a 6 wicket haul, and an economy rate of 6.46 runs per over. The second spot was grabbed by Shane Warne, Tanvir’s captain, who bagged 19 wickets in 15 matches.

The pace bowling sensation from Kerala, S Sreesanth, was at the 3rd position, with the same number of wickets as Warne, in the same number of games, but an inferior average, and economy rate. Shane Watson, followed Sreesanth at the 4th position, as he took 17 wickets in 15 games, and at the end of the top 5 was Manpreet Gony of the Chennai Super Kings, who took 17 wickets too, but played one more game when compared to Watson, and landed himself to be the 5th player with most wickets in IPL 2008.

Most Sixes in IPL 2008

In the inaugural season of the tournament, the player who hit the most sixes, and in turn, entertained the fans the most was a gentleman named, Sanath Jayasuriya. His tally of sixes, at the end of the tournament, rested at a total of 31 sixes in 14 innings. The ‘Orange Cap’ winner of the tournament, Shaun Marsh was the second place holder, with 26 sixes, in 11 matches.

The next three names in the top 5 are of the players, who have known the world over for their big hits. Yusuf Pathan, with 25 biggies in 16 games, Virender Sehwag, with 21 sixes in 14 games, were at the 3rd and 4th spots. And, the man of the hour for India in recent years, Rohit Sharma managed to squeeze in at number 5 with 19 sixes to his tally in just 13 matches.

Most fours in IPL 2008

The now-retired player, Gautam Gambhir, who at the time played for the Delhi Daredevils, who have now rebranded as Delhi Capitals, was at the helm of the affairs when it came to hitting fours in IPL 2008. He hit as many as 68 fours in the 14 games, and the next batsman on the list, Shaun Marsh was at 59 fours in 11 matches when the tournament ended.

Holding the 3rd position in the list, having scored 232 runs in boundaries, was Sanath Jayasuriya, who had 58 fours in his account. There wasn’t much of a close call between the players at the 4th and the 5th position, as Graeme Smith, who held the 4th spot had hit 54 4s in 11 matches and Adam Gilchrist, the captain of the now defunct, Deccan Chargers, had hit 51 fours in 14 games.

Fastest 50s in IPL 2008

The fastest 50 of the first season of the Indian Premier League came off the bat of Yusuf Pathan, who smacked a 21 ball sizzler against the Delhi Daredevils, on the 24th of April, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Closely following Yusuf’s record was Kumar Sangakkara’s 23 ball 50 which he hit against the Mumbai Indians, at the IS Bindra Stadium on the very next day of Yusuf’s inning. The third-fastest fifty was hit by a familiar name, Virender Sehwag, who makes an appearance in

the top 5 twice. The one at the 3rd spot was against Kings XI Punjab in 23 balls, and the one that placed him at the 5th position was against the Chennai Super Kings in 24 balls. And, the intermediary position, the 4th position was grabbed by Kumar Sangakkara, again who had hit a 23 ball half-century, for the second time, but against a different opponent, which happened to be the Delhi Daredevils.
