“Ashwin to Starc: First time ?” Twitter reacts as Australia drops Mitchell Starc from the first Test of the Ashes 2023 against England

England won the toss and opted to bat first.

Australia drops Micthell Starc for the first Ashes Test 2023 at Edgbaston

The first Test between England and Australia is currently taking place at Edgbaston. Hosts skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bat first. While England already announced their XI a couple of days back, many eyeballs were raised after Australia’s XI was announced.

Australia almost fielded the same XI as they did in the final of the ICC World Test Championship. But they made just a change, bringing in Josh Hazlewood in place of Mitchell Starc. This comes as a big surprise as Starc has been at his best when he has played Ashes and while the question about Hazlewood’s place in the XI was there, not many expected him to replace the lanky left-armer.

The fight in the place was between Scott Boland and Josh Hazlewood but with the kind of display Boland has showed in the last few years, it was hard to drop him. Speaking to Micthell Starc’s exclusion, skipper Pat Cummins said that it was a tough call.

Speaking at the toss, he said: “Tough call, Starc was really good last game but good to have someone like Hazlewood come in. Tough to manage the workloads, but that is a good problem to have.”
