One of the pillars of the Indian middle order in both Tests and ODIs, Shreyas Iyer, was sidelined for the foreseeable future with a back injury early this year, dealing a devastating blow to Indian cricket. The good news is that the expected return date of the Mumbai batter has been announced.
Shreyas Iyer reportedly finished surgery on Tuesday in London, according to a story from The Times of India. Before the ODI World Cup 2023 in India, which is slated for this coming October/November, he plans to make his comeback to cricket.
Unfortunately, he will be out for the rest of the season, thus he won’t be able to play in June at the Oval in the World Test Championship final. According to the article, he would require at least three months to fully recuperate from the operation and return to normal physical activity.
Shreyas Iyer is expected to be fit for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023
After missing the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 because of a back issue, Shreyas Iyer had just made a recovery. After just two days of playing in the fourth Test against Australia, the injury returned to haunt him, and he was eventually ruled out of the match. Because of this injury, he was unable to play in either the IPL 2023 or the WTC Final.
The Kolkata Knight Riders, the IPL team he leads, took a major hit because of his injury. Nitish Rana replaced him as captain of the Shah Rukh Khan-owned team while he was out of action.
In both Tests and one-day internationals, Shreyas Iyer has established himself as the team’s batter in number 4 and 5 respectively. Iyer amassed 1609 runs in 2022 in all international cricket forms.
