Indian Premier League has announced the schedule and the format of the fixtures in IPL 2022. Considering the COVID-19 pandemic and the arrival of two new teams, the fans were looking forward to the announcement. In this article, we take a look at the new format for IPL 2022.
The season will begin on March 26th
The major news is that the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League will begin on March 26th. The season will end on May 29th. While 70 league matches will be played across Mumbai and Pune, the venue of the playoff games will be decided later.
Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium (CCI), and DY Patil Stadium along with Pune’s MCA International Stadium will host the 70 league games. While Wankhede and DY Patil will host 20 games each, 15 games each will take place at the remaining two venues.

The format for IPL 2022
Based on the number of titles won and the number of finals played, all teams have been split into two virtual groups. As per the statement by IPL, the format will be, “Each team will play twice with the teams in their group and with the team in the same row in the second group. With the rest of the teams in the second group, they will play only once during the season.”
All teams will play four games at Wankhede and DY Patil Stadium and three games each at the remaining venues. It will follow the same format of home-and-away fixtures as in previous seasons. While MI, KKR, RR, DC & LSG fall in Group A, Group B will consist of CSK, SRH, RCB, PBKS and GT.
For starters, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings will clash for two encounters. However, some key games such as MI vs RCB will only happen once in the league phase. The next announcement by IPL will be about the list of matches.
