“He Isn’t That Man”- Vince Russo Explains Why WWE Picked Cody Rhodes To Headline WrestleMania 39

The wrestling world was abuzz when The Rock revealed that a potential showdown with The Tribal Chief, Roman Reigns, almost came to fruition at WrestleMania 39. However, the dream match was shelved due to the absence of an ideal storyline. Instead, Roman Reigns defended his Undisputed Universal Championship against Cody Rhodes, emerging victorious.

WWE veteran Vince Russo now speculates that Cody Rhodes might have been a substitute for The Rock after the latter declined the match due to underlying reasons, potentially tied to Vince McMahon’s controversies. On an episode of Writing with Russo, Russo expressed his belief that Cody Rhodes could have indeed filled The Rock’s shoes for the marquee event.

“Yup, it most definitely could have been. Brother. Yes,” Vince Russo said.

However, Russo was clear in his assessment of Cody Rhodes, expressing that while he considered him a dependable performer and a viable World Champion, he didn’t see Rhodes as someone who could single-handedly carry WWE on his shoulders and represent the company on the grandest stages.

“I have the exact same perspective as Cody Rhodes. He’d be my Jeff Jarrett, for sure. He’s a fantastic wrestler, could knock heels off, and takes a little more damage than Jeff did, but he’s someone you can count on to hold that title. Will he attend casual fans? He could relate to Hollywood, right? He might appear on both the Fallon and Kimmel shows. He isn’t that man, in my opinion. He could carry your belt, I suppose, and he’s a fantastic wrestler, but I don’t think he has that sort of star power. I just think that,” Russo added.

Cody Rhodes currently holds the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship, sharing the honor with his former rival turned friend, Jey Uso. His journey in WWE continues to be a focal point of interest, leaving fans and experts intrigued about his future prospects and potential marquee matchups on the horizon.
