Former Indian cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri has opined that the selection committee can recall veteran wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik back to the squad if he continues to impress in the ongoing Indian Premier League season. Shastri was the coach of the team when Karthik played his last T20I match for India.
Karthik played for the Indian cricket team in a home T20I series against the Australian cricket team in February 2019. He then participated in IPL 2019 and traveled to England with the squad for the 50-over World Cup. While Karthik could not impress much in the ODI format, he also lost his place in the T20I team.
The selectors used Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson as the wicket-keepers after the 2019 Cricket World Cup. Karthik shifted his focus to commentary, but he still has the desire to play international cricket.
Playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2022, Dinesh has done an excellent job so far. He has nailed the role of the finisher and won two matches for the Bangalore-based franchise in the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League.
Ravi Shastri gave his views on Dinesh Karthik making a comeback to the Indian team
Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri recently opined that if Dinesh Karthik has a fantastic IPL season, he will be in the mix for the T20 World Cup. Explaining the reason behind it, Shastri pointed out that the wicket-keeper batter has the experience and has got all shots in his arsenal.
“Dinesh Karthik has started off really hot and if he has a cracker jack of an IPL season, surely he will be in the mix for T20 World Cup. He has got the experience, he has got all the shots,” the former Indian head coach was quoted as saying on ESPNCricinfo.
