Fans on Twitter reacted after veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin’s analysed India’s innings in the first T20I against Sri Lanka. They lauded him for his reading and said that he could have been one of the greatest captains ever.
“Cumulative Impact greater than Volume,” R Ashwin after India’s intent full batting against Sri Lanka
India displayed a sensational performance in the first game of the T20I series against Sri Lanka in Mumbai that saw them clinch the first game by 2 runs. It’s fair to say that it was bold and courageous captaincy by Hardik Pandya that helped the team take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Asked to bat first, India was off the staggering first over, where they scored 17 runs, they lost wickets in quick succession with Shubman Gill (7), Suryakumar Yadav (7) and Sanju Samson (5) back in the hut for just 46 runs.
However, despite losing their early wickets, Indian batters continued smashing the ball. Ishan Kishan scored a brisk 37 and skipper Pandya chipped in with a 29-run knock. But they both failed to end the innings on high. After that, it was Deepak Hooda (41*) along with Axar Patel (31*), who stitched a crucial 68 runs partnership to help India post a total of 162 runs on the board, which they subsequently defended to win the game by 2 runs.
What stood out tall for India was their aggressive approach. Despite losing the wickets, they didn’t restrict taking shots and they went after that bowling. Their body language was lauded by many including R Ashwin, who analysed their innings.
Taking to his Twitter, he said: “In this format (T20) measuring performances can prove to be catastrophic if we don’t measure the processes, therefore I believe the “Batting Intent Index” could be a great starting point. #T20 #INDvSL Cumulative Impact greater than Volume.”
