Gautam Gambhir reckons Rohit Sharma is the best IPL captain of all time and not MS Dhoni. Gambhir made that assessment purely on the basis of the no. of trophies both captains have won leading their respective sides.
MS Dhoni has won 6 titles as the captain of CSK, 4 IPL titles and two Champions League titles. Rohit Sharma has also won 6 titles as the captain of Mumbai Indians, 5 IPL titles and one Champions League title.
However, if one compares MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma on the basis of the no. of IPL titles both captains have won, then Rohit Sharma is ahead because he has won one more IPL title than Dhoni.
Gambhir was speaking on a “Yes or No” show of ESPNcricinfo where he had to answer every question in a Yes or No. When he was asked if MS Dhoni is the best IPL captain of all time, he answered in a “No”. Gambhir said you have to see the no. of IPL titles. Rohit Sharma has won 5 and MS Dhoni has won 4.
Gambhir also reckons if he had to make the CSK retentions, he wouldn’t retain MS Dhoni, and he would retain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja and maybe Faf du Plessis.
But, Gambhir said it depends on MS Dhoni as well if he wants to play or not and what kind of role he sees for himself at CSK next year.
MS Dhoni has said recently that any decision regarding him continuing as a player for CSK or not will depend on how many retentions BCCI allows for each team because it’s important to consider what’s best for CSK going forward and make retentions accordingly.
Apart from Dhoni, some of the other players who have got good chance to be retained by CSK are Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali. However, it remains to be seen what decision BCCI eventually makes regarding the no. of retentions allowed to each team.
