AR-U23 vs AU-U23: After the heroics of the senior team bagging the Copa America title, Argentina Under-23s get their Olympic Games Group C campaign underway on Thursday, when they meet Australia Under-23s at the Sapporo Dome.
They’ve been one of the top teams in the history of the competition. Argentina won gold at Athens 2004 and successfully defended the title at Beijing 2008 under Lionel Messi. Argentina are walking into this encounter with two back to back wins over Denmark and Saudi Arabia.
In their first outing, the Danes opened the scoring in the 56th minute, but a 92nd-minute equaliser turned things around completely. It was then followed by a banger from Fausto Vera of Argentinos Juniors, slotting in the late winner. A 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia was a rather comfortable victory.
Australia U23, on the other hand, have poor past match performances. Their fourth-place finish at Barcelona ’92 was the closest they have ever come to securing a medal for one of the globe’s most competitive sporting nations.
However, their last two games have been down in the dumps. They lost 3-2 to Mexico and followed it with a 2-0 loss against New Zealand. It’ll be a tough game first up for Australia with a strong opponent and a group filled with talented teams.
