Haaland’s future lies at Anfield, hints Salzburg sporting director

Right since his arrival at Westfalenstadion, Erling Haaland has left an impressive mark and a trail of carnage in his wake in every hallowed stadium in the world wherever he has been. The Norwegian has been an absolute sensation and the way he has dominated proceedings for Dortmund has left his fans and admirers utterly agape.

Before the towering striker arrived in Germany, he was briefly linked with Manchester United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted reconciliation with his old ward. Unfortunately, Dortmund intercepted that move and gazumped the monstrous lad from Norway.

Since his arrival at Dortmund, he has managed to net 24 goals in 27 appearances which is nothing short of wondrous and that too for a young lad like him.

Despite the fact that United will stay connected with the striker nonetheless, Old Trafford doesn’t seem like his favourable destination as per the latest hint dropped by the RB Salzburg sporting director. Haaland is hoping to challenge for the Bundesliga title with Dortmund, however, Salzburg chief, Christoph Freund claimed that this will just be the beginning for him as his eyes lay elsewhere and far beyond the Bundesliga.

Freund appeared on a show with German legend Lothar Matthaus and on the suggestion of Liverpool being a potential destination, the former gave a verbal nod.

This is what Freund had to say about Haaland

Freund quoted, “That’s where he will land. He can play for any club in the world. With his mentality, his will, with his self-confidence, he can make a mark on European football in the next ten years.”

Matthaus added, “Dortmund is one of the top 10 teams in Europe, but there are five or six better teams and that is where he will play at some point. I’m thinking of the top clubs; not necessarily Bayern Munich, because Robert Lewandowski will be playing for the next two or three years and Haaland will probably not stay in Dortmund that long.”

Haaland’s first season saw him firing 28 goals from 22 games at Salzburg and all it took for Dortmund to lay their claim on the striker, was a solitary season. However, according to Freund, these kinds of transfer stories have now become cliché for a club of their stature.

Freund told Goal and SPOX, “Erling was not a special story in this respect. That doesn’t hurt us at all, it makes us proud because it’s part of our concept. The player can take the next step, we get income through a transfer, which we can invest in scouting and new talent, among other things.”

He concluded saying, “In addition, there is again a free place in the squad that the next talent can take. It is a confirmation for us that we are on the right path and that we are on the right path. No. We are an independent club and we make our own decisions.”
