When all IPL teams start a new campaign the most obvious goal is to win the IPL but for any team to win the IPL, they need to reach the Finals of the IPL. Every team’s first goal has to be to make the playoffs and then make the IPL Finals. It is not an easy task to make the Finals year after year but there are a couple of teams who have managed to reach that level.
In the 14 seasons of the IPL, there have been many teams who have made the Finals. In fact, each and every franchise from the current season has made the Finals at least once. Even Rising Pune Supergiant and Deccan Chargers have made the IPL Finals. So, let us have a look at the five teams who have made the IPL Finals the most number of times in IPL history.
4. Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders – 2
Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders both have made the IPL Finals twice in the history of the IPL. SRH made the Finals for the first time in IPL 2016 and went on to lift their inaugural trophy. They once again made the Final in IPL 2018 but lost to Chennai Super Kings. They have made the playoffs in 2019 and 2020 but didn’t make the Final.
Kolkata Knight Riders have a 100%-win record in the IPL Finals as they reached the Finals in 2012 and 2014 and won the trophy both times. In 2012, they defeated CSK and in 2014 they defeated PBKS. They haven’t made the playoffs in the last two seasons and they will be hoping to change that in this season.
3. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 3
Royal Challengers Bangalore has made the IPL final thrice in the history of the IPL but hasn’t won a single IPL trophy up till now. They have made the most appearances in the final without winning a trophy. They made the Finals in 2009 and lost to Deccan Chargers in a close encounter.
In 2011 they made the Finals once again but lost to Chennai Super Kings comfortably and in IPL 2016 they lost to SRH in a closely contested match. For some or other reason they haven’t managed to cross the finish line and they will be hoping to do so in this season.
2. Mumbai Indians – 6
Mumbai Indians haven’t made the most IPL Finals but still, they have the most number of IPL trophies in the history of the IPL. They have five IPL trophies and have made the IPL Finals six times. MI reached the IPL Finals for the first time in 2010 but they lost to CSK in that season.
In 2013 they once again made the Finals but this time they defeated CSK. The same two teams battled it out in 2015 and the result was the same as well with MI winning their second title. In 2017, they defeated Rising Pune Supergiant and in 2019 they once again defeated CSK. In 2020, they broke their odd year jinx and defeated Delhi Capitals in the Finals.
1. Chennai Super Kings – 9
Chennai Super Kings has been the most consistent side in the history of the IPL as they have made the playoffs almost every IPL season. In fact, 2020 was the first year when they failed to make the playoffs. CSK has made the IPL Finals 9 times in 12 seasons.
They made it for the first time in 2008, then they won in 2010 and 2011. They made the Finals but lost in 2012, 2013, and 2015 to KKR, MI, and MI respectively. In IPL 2018, which was their comeback season they made the Finals and won the trophy. In IPL 2019 they lost the Final by just one run. The twin champions recently pulled off their ninth final appearance as they rocked and rolled Delhi Capitals, thanks to a sizzling finish from the iconic MS Dhoni.
