3 opening combinations India could try before the 2024 T20 World Cup

It has been a while since India has explored full-time opening combinations outside of KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. However, it seems that will happen soon, especially in the T20 format. India struggled with its opening partnerships in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Changes are inevitable and we can expect some fresh faces going forward. Here, we take a look at three opening combinations India could try before the 2024 T20 World Cup.

1) Shubman Gill – Prithvi Shaw

This duo played together for India at the U19 World Cup a few years ago. The stars are aligning for the repeat of this combo, this time for the senior side.

While Prithvi Shaw is an excellent T20 opener, there were a few concerns with Shubman Gill. However, the Punjab cricketer proved his skills in the format with his stunning show in IPL 2022. He has already been selected for the Indian T20I Team and if he does well, he could as well cement this spot.

2) Sanju Samson – Ishan Kishan

The Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan duo is one of the opening combinations India could try before the 2024 T20 World Cup. If India needs ultra-aggressive openers, this combination is the solution. This way, India would also have a right-left combination at the start.

Sanju Samson, from now on, must be a confirmed starter for the Indian Team. Ishan Kishan has a few issues but he has the talent to do well. Hence, India could also try out this combination.

3) Ruturaj Gaikwad – Prithvi Shaw

Ruturaj Gaikwad and Prithvi Shaw will form a complementary opening combination. While Prithvi will go right from the start, Ruturaj might take some time. However, Ruturaj does well in the middle overs and he can then become aggressive.

India will tick quite a few boxes with this combination. The batting attack can have an anchor at the top of the order and this will allow the management to slot in big hitters in the remaining positions.
