Five Controversial quotes by Gautam Gambhir about Indian cricketers

Gautam Gambhir has been one of the finest batsmen India has ever seen. He was one of those players who used to deliver under pressure. In the 2007 World T20 Final, he scored crucial runs against Pakistan when India needed them. In the 2011 World Cup Final, when India lost both the openers Gautam Gambhir played one of the finest knocks which helped India lift the World Cup after 28 years. He has captained Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL titles so he has achieved a lot in his cricketing career. But after his retirement, Gautam Gambhir has said some controversial things about some Indian cricketers which haven’t gone well with the fans or with some cricketing experts. So, let’s have a look at the five controversial quotes by Gautam Gambhir about Indian cricketers.

5. Sanju Samson is not just the best wicket-keeper batsmen in India but also the best young batsman going around in India

During this IPL, Gautam Gambhir tweeted which said that Sanju Samson is the best young batsmen in India and he was asking people whether anybody is up for any debate? This tweet came after Sanju Samson smashed a half-century against Chennai Super Kings in their opening IPL game. There is no doubt that Sanju Samson has immense potential and he has shown it time and again on the big stage. But to say that he is the best young batsmen in India is probably going too far. Samson is playing in the IPL since 2013 and he hasn’t had even one 500+ season in his IPL career. Even in this IPL after two good games, he wasn’t performing well until the last few games. All the fans were up for debate with Gautam Gambhir with these same arguments and it didn’t go well with the fans.

4. “Dhoni’s rotation policy was a massive shock”

Gautam Gambhir made this statement about MS Dhoni regarding the 2012 Tri-Series between India, Australia, and Sri Lanka. In that tri-series, Gambhir, Sehwag, and Tendulkar were played on rotation as one of them was rested and two were part of the XI. When asked about this, Gambhir said, “In the 2012 Tri-series in Australia, Dhoni declared that he can’t play all three (Gambhir, Sachin, and Sehwag) of us together as he was looking ahead at the 2015 World Cup. He said that it was a huge shock for him and it would have been a huge shock for any cricketer. “I have not heard anyone be told in 2012 that they would never be a part of the 2015 World Cup.” He said that he believes that if you keep scoring runs then age is just a number.

3. Virat Kohli does well only because he has Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni in the team

Virat Kohli is the Indian skipper in all formats since 2017 when MS Dhoni resigned as India’s white-ball skipper. Virat’s numbers as captain are right up there with a few top captains. But Gambhir believes that this is only because he has the presence of Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni. During the 2019 World Cup, Gambhir said, “Virat Kohli is a good captain for India only because he has MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma behind him. He even talked about how RCB has never won the IPL under his captaincy. “Most of the times his team RCB has finished on number 8.” This statement didn’t go well with the Kohli fans.

2. “R Ashwin should play at No.4 in CWC 2019”

R Ashwin who was dropped from the Indian white-ball team after the 2017 Champions Trophy hasn’t played a game in blue for India since then. In early 2019, when the whole cricketing world was debating about India’s No.4 batsman, Gautam Gambhir suggested that R Ashwin should bat at No.4 for India in the 2019 World Cup. This is another controversial statement because Ashwin has never batted so high for India. He has Test hundreds and can bat but No.4 is not a position for him especially in the ODI format.

1. Time to remove Virat Kohli from RCB captaincy

After RCB got knocked out in the Eliminator, Gautam Gambhir on a show on ESPN Cricinfo said that it is time to remove Virat Kohli as RCB captain. He said, “The problem is about accountability.” Gambhir talked about how eight years without a trophy is a long time. He even said that there won’t be any other captain who would have got eight years without an IPL trophy.
