MI Cape Town recently announced the signing of Kagiso Rabada, Liam Livingstone, Rashid Khan, Sam Curran and Dewald Brevis before the CSA T20 League Auctions. It is already a solid core and the management will now hope to fill the gaps. Five other franchises have also made signings which means that the cream of South African T20I cricket may not be available at the auctions. With three foreign slots filled, MI Cape Town will have very few options in that regard, as well. Therefore, they will have to make use of their scouting department and fill the squad with the best resources available. It also needs to be noted that the franchise has spent close to half of its purse on the signings already. Hence, on that note, here, we take a look at four South African players MI Cape Town must realistically target to make the squad unbeatable.
1) Janneman Malan
Having represented Cape Cobras and Cape Town Blitz so far, it might as well be the time for Malan to wear the MI Cape Town shirt. The franchise could use Liam Livingstone as an opener but the Englishman’s hitting at the death will be more important for the squad.
Malan might not have cemented his spot in the T20I setup so far. Nevertheless, he is an important ODI cricketer for the country and can be backed to do well in the shortest format. Compared to other openers, he will be an attainable target for the franchise. With him, they will also have a fine investment for the future with the likes of Dewald Brevis in the mix. Therefore, MI Cape Town could target the cricketer.
2) Rilee Rossouw
Rilee Rossouw is one of the South African players MI Cape Town must realistically target to make the squad unbeatable. The southpaw is in cracking touch and if no other teams sign him up before auctions, he should be on the top of the list for MI Cape Town.
Rossouw is a left-hander in the middle order, an attribute that’s tough to fill. He is known for his big knocks, something that the squad would require. Therefore, he will be a great target, although it could become very hard for the team to hire him eventually.
3) Heinrich Klaasen
Tristan Stubbs will surely be one of the targets for Mumbai Indians. However, the youngster could go for a lot of money as other teams will be interested.
Klaasen will also have a lot of suitors. However, the franchise can target him as the wicket-keeper. He is experienced and has shown good form recently. The right-hander could feature in multiple batting slots and would be a solid addition between Dewald Brevis and Liam Livingstone.
Magala is also one of the South African players MI Cape Town must realistically target to make the squad unbeatable. Kagiso Rabad and Sam Curran will lead the pace attack for the franchise. However, both these cricketers could have issues in the death overs.
Sisanda Magala is known as one of the best death bowlers in South African cricket. He is yet to fire for his country. However, in a tournament like the CSA T20 League, he would surely be great recruitment. Magala and Rabada combining in the death overs would be the best option for MI at the moment. They could also look for overseas options to fill this role.
