4 players who are making a comeback in ODI World Cup after 8 years

Usually, not many cricketers get a chance to represent their country in one ODI World Cup campaign. Of course, a few established cricketers go on to play more than one ODI WC edition. However, it is hard to make a comeback and play a World Cup campaign when you are dropped for the last edition but were a part of the tournament before that. That said, a few players are about to do that in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Here, we take a look at four players who are making a comeback in the ODI World Cup after 8 years.

1) Mitchell Marsh

Mitchell Marsh won the World Cup back in 2015. However, for the 2019 edition, he was not selected. He was called in as an injury cover for Marcus Stoinis but did not get to play in the competition. Therefore, his appearance in ODI WC 2023 will be after eight long years.

Now, though, Mitchell is a vital player for the Aussies. Seen as the future skipper of the side, he is in top form and will be expected to win a few matches on his own for the nation. Apart from with the bat, the cricketer might also offer a few overs of bowling on pitches that suit him.

2) Axar Patel

Axar Patel is one of the players who are making a comeback in the ODI World Cup after 8 years. Not many know but Axar was a part of the Indian squad that travelled to Australia for the 2015 ODI World Cup. While he did not get a chance in 2019, he is likely to be selected for the upcoming edition.

Thanks to his performances in both departments, Axar Patel is a vital figure in the Indian Team right now. Yes, he might not feature in the playing XI often but it would be a great miss to not include him, especially with the fragile fitness of some of the players in the team.

3) Wayne Parnell (likely to be selected by South Africa for the 2023 ODI World Cup)

Wayne Parnell made an early debut for South Africa. However, after he moved to England to fulfil a Kolpak Deal, he lost the chance to represent South Africa. Hence, he missed the 2019 ODI WC.

That said, he is back in the setup and is certainly in the picture to be selected for the 2023 ODI WC. He might compete with Marco Jansen for a spot in the team. Considering his experience and the fact that he has played quite a lot in India, Parnell might get the nod ahead of the youngster.

4) Dushmantha Chameera (Subject to fitness)

Dushmantha Chameera is one of the players who are making a comeback in the ODI World Cup after 8 years. The pacer was a part of the 2015 ODI World Cup squad. However, he missed the bus in 2019.

At the moment, Chameera is having injury issues. However, if he is fit, he will surely be selected for the 2023 ODI World Cup squad. The cricketer is a force in the powerplay and can pick wickets in a heap. His ‘hit the deck’ skills would also help his side offer a versatile bowling attack in the tournament.
