5 Instances In WWE When The Wrong Superstar Lost A Major Championship Match

The modern era of the WWE has seen the rise of many young and talented athletes, transitioning from rookies into main event caliber stars. This impressive list of Superstars includes Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, Bayley, Dolph Ziggler and several others. However, if you closely observe, the afore-mentioned Superstars had one thing in common: starting their road to the top with a major championship victory.

WWE is known to book its Superstars depending on their talent and most importantly how the WWE Universe reacts to their presence inside the squared circle. The crowning of new champions at the right place and at the right time plays a decisive factor in the ascend of a rising star into a top-tier WWE Superstar, something that has helped the company build the stars of this generation.

But there have been certainly missed opportunities that should have seen the crowning of champions to establish them into Top Superstars. Here are 5 instances where WWE missed crowning a well-deserved World Champion:

1. Drew McIntyre (WWE Clash at the Castle)

One of the biggest missed crowning moments of a champion happened most recently last month at WWE Clash at the Castle, where the home-crowd favorite Drew McIntyre battled Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

With a strong build-up, showcasing the Scottish Warrior background, the United Kingdom firmly behind him, and even his first impression at the event beginning with his old theme song ‘Broken Dreams’, the audience in attendance and millions watching at home were in total belief that Drew was going to end Roman’s dominant title run, however, WWE decided not to pull the trigger and let Reigns retain.

2. Shinsuke Nakamura (WrestleMania 34)

When Shinsuke Nakamura was called up to the main roster, he made an immediate impact by winning the 2018 Royal Rumble match.

Fans were hoping to see The Artist ascend to the top of the mountain with a title win at the Show of Shows against AJ Styles, however, WWE’s backstage politics did not let Shin taste the gold and instead he turned heel at the end of the match. This was the beginning of the downfall for Nakamura, and he has not recovered ever since.

3. Samoa Joe (Great Balls of Fire)

Samoa Joe dominated the competition back in NXT, reigning as a three-time NXT Champion, and was called up on the main roster in 2017 inserting himself as Triple H muscle in his feud with Seth Rollins.

Looking to continue his dominance, Samoa Joe was later on slated to face then Universal Champion Brock Lesnar for the title with highly intense weeks of build-up, which saw Joe gain the upper hand on the Beast Incarnate on numerous occasions. However, WWE still did not book Joe for the big title win over Lesnar, which could have been the moment Samoa Joe needed to ascend to main event status.

4. Liv Morgan (Day 1)

Liv Morgan had all the momentum and support of the WWE Universe heading into her high-stakes title match against the cocky and arrogant champion Big Time Becks, Becky Lynch at WWE Day 1.

The crowd was firmly behind the underdog Morgan looking to seize her big match moment, but WWE creative went into a completely different direction slating Liv to lose to Becky Lynch and snatch her glorious moment of winning a title in a mega showdown.

5. Braun Strowman (WWE Crown Jewel 2018)

After then-WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns relinquished his title due to leukemia, a title match was announced pitting former world champion Brock Lesnar against the Monster Among Men Braun Strowman.

Strowman was a massive fan favorite and had not been a world champion at the time, which looked to be the perfect opportunity for Braun’s crowning as a legitimate main event star. However, things changed, and Lesnar was booked to win back the WWE Universal title with WWE missing another opportunity for establishing a top-caliber Superstar at the perfect timing.
