The road to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 has begun. Teams have submitted their lists of retained and released players and it’s now time for the IPL Auction 2023. The event is slated to take place on 23rd December in Kochi and after it, fans will have a clear picture of what’s in offer for the next edition of the tournament.

With the auction a few days ahead, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to introduce a new rule in the upcoming Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL 2023), which is likely to take place in April-May next year.

After the successful inception of the impact rule in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, BCCI will now introduce it in the IPL, which is the world’s largest league. As per this rule, teams will be allowed to bring in a substitute in place of the player, who will be part of the playing XI.

A team needs to name four players at the toss who they might use as impact players in the match. The impact player, however, cannot be drafted into the XI after the 14th over. Therefore if teams want to use this rule, they need to replace the player before the 14th over. The replaced player then cannot take part in the match not even as a substitute fielder.

Releasing the official statement, BCCI stated: “With the ever-growing popularity of T20 cricket, it is imperative that we look at introducing new dimensions which will make this format more attractive and interesting not only for our viewers but also the participating teams from a strategic viewpoint.

“The BCCI would like to introduce the concept of ‘Impact Player’ wherein participating teams could replace one member of its playing XI during a T20 match based on the context of the game.”
