3 players whom South Africa must try as Temba Bavuma’s replacement as an opener

Temba Bavuma had a forgettable outing in the 2023 ODI World Cup. There were a lot of expectations from the player, who actually had a decent patch before the World Cup. However, the player crumbled under pressure and hardly could contribute to his side. It is actually best for both parties if Bavuma steps aside from the white-ball formats. South Africa had Bavuma and Quinton de Kock as openers. Quinton has already retired and Bavuma might be dropped. Hence, there is a challenge for the management to identify the new openers. Here, we take a look at three players whom South Africa must try as Temba Bavuma’s replacement as an opener.

1) Dewald Brevis

Dewald Brevis has already made his debut for South Africa. It is now time for his development to improve. At least, to start with, he should get a confirmed spot in the ODI teams.

While Brevis might suit as a middle-order batter, he should initially get a chance at the top of the order. It would be a good test of his skills. If he comes well, South Africa would have hit a jackpot.

2) Ryan Rickelton

Ryan Rickelton is one of the players whom South Africa must try as Temba Bavuma’s replacement as an opener. He is a wicket-keeper and can be a suitable option at the top of the order.

The player, though, will have to step up in the coming months. He has not grabbed his opportunities, so far. If he can do that, he is a player to watch out for.

3) Janneman Malan

Not long ago, Janneman Malan was a firm part of the ODI playing XI. However, after a drop in form, the player could not make a comeback. He missed out on the 2023 ODI World Cup squad eventually.

That said, he has the age to make a comeback. The skills are present and it is also about backing the youngster to make a strong return to international cricket.
