3 capped spinners who could be mostly used as ‘Impact Player’ in IPL 2023

One of the interesting rules in IPL 2023 will be the ‘Impact Substitution’ rule. Recently, IPL announced that captains can name the playing XI after the toss. This along with the ‘Impact Player’ rule makes it essentially a 12-man game. Going by a few picks at IPL 2023 Auctions, it is likely that they were chosen only to operate as an ‘Impact Player’. On that note, here, we take a look at three capped spinners who could be mostly used as ‘Impact Player’ in IPL 2023.

1) Amit Mishra – Lucknow Super Giants

40-year-old Amit Mishra was one of the late picks for LSG at IPL 2023 Auctions. He missed the last few seasons of IPL and considering he plays very little domestic cricket, it was surprising that LSG made a bid for him.

Nevertheless, as a backup for Ravi Bishnoi, Mishra is a decent pick. In fact, on a few pitches, KL Rahul and co. could use him as an Impact Player. In the middle overs, Mishra can change the game and depending on which opposition batter is at the crease, LSG could unleash Mishra.

2) Piyush Chawla – Mumbai Indians

Piyush Chawla is one of the capped spinners who could be mostly used as an ‘Impact Player’ in IPL 2023. Just like Amit Mishra, MI also made a similar move for Piyush Chawla.

MI does not have an experienced spin attack. In this context, Chawla could also be a part of the main XI. However, the five-time champions could rather use him as an Impact Sub in a few games.

3) Varun Chakravarthy – Kolkata Knight Riders

KKR’s bowling attack comprises Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav, Sunil Narine and Tim Southee/Lockie Ferguson. It is only Varun who does not add batting value.

If KKR is batting first, Varun may not be in the initial XI. He could only be used as an Impact Player by the franchise. Varun is also a liability on the field. Hence, due to these reasons, he is on this list.
