EG-U23 vs SP-U23: A prominent Spain Under-23s squad will get their Olympic Games Group C campaign underway on Thursday, as they go head to head against Egypt Under-23s in Sapporo.
Spain has only participated in three Olympic football competitions since memorably claiming gold on home soil in 1992. They have returned to the podium just once following their crowning as champions in Barcelona – receiving the silver medal as runners-up at Sydney 2000.
Before getting their campaign underway, Spain U23 matched up against Japan U23 for a friendly warmup game. However, the match ended in a 1-1 draw. The Spanish side looks strong with six-star players who featured frequently last month; Eric Garcia, Dani Olmo, Mikel Oyarzabal, Pau Torres, goalkeeper Unai Simon
Egypt has found it tough to go past the quarter-final stages despite making it to the 15 previous Olympic Games. The Pharaohs have, though, recently won the African Under-23 Championships to make it this far.
They also claimed the prized scalp of a strong Brazil Under-23s side last November, coming from behind to win the match 2-1. Following that, they beat South Africa last month by a 3-0 margin.
It will be a battle among two of the greatest teams at the Olympics and a price at stake for both teams.
