Explained: What Is The Meaning Of King Pair In Test Cricket?

Day 5 of the Lord’s Test match between England and India has turned out to be one of the Test matches in recent times. The day started with England becoming the firm favourites to win the game. However, the tides shifted quickly for the game to fall into India’s grasp. Meanwhile, English all-rounder Sam Curran got a King Pair in the game. We talk about the meaning of the term in this article.

Shami and Bumrah put India in a strong position

After India lost the wicket of Rishabh Pant early on Day 5, England came on the driver’s seat. However, Indian bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami shared an unlikely 89* run partnership which paved India to set a 272-run target for the hosts.

With the ball, too, Shami and Bumrah were on fire. Both the bowlers got the openers out for a duck and gradually made inroads into the English batting line-up. The game is spiced up well as the clock ticks by.

Sam Curran secures a King Pair

A ‘pair‘ in a Test match means if the batsman gets out for a duck in both innings of a game. This is a common occurrence in the sport. However, a ‘King Pair’ is somewhat rare.

King Pair means if a batsman gets out for a golden duck in both innings of a Test match. This means that the batter has faced only two deliveries in the game, and he has got out on both these balls. Sam Curran got a King Pair in the ongoing match. While Curran got out to Ishant Sharma in the first innings, he edged one to Pant of Siraj‘s bowling in the second.

Who are the other players who have got a King Pair?

While players such as William Attewel and James Anderson have got it from England camp in the past, some of the other popular cricketers to have got it are Adam Gilchrist, Virender Sehwag and Ajit Agarkar. Sam Curran was the 22nd player in the game’s history to secure a King Pair.
