Explained: The Meaning Of Aboriginal Australian Cricketers

Scott Boland was the star of the third Ashes Test that happened in Melbourne in 2021. Despite it being his first game, Boland ran through the English batting order. Especially in the second innings, he was in top form, as he collected six wickets from just four overs. Boland was then named the Player of the Match. The Aussie cricketer actually happens to be an Aboriginal Australian player. In this article, we take a look at the meaning of Aboriginal Australian Cricketers.

Who are Aboriginal Australian Cricketers?

As per Wikipedia, “Indigenous Australians are people with familial heritage to groups that lived in Australia before British colonisation.” The group includes both the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples from the nation. These two categories are not just one group but many sections of people with different cultures and heritage. A few Indigenous Australians have been able to make a mark in sports.

Some of the popular Australian Aboriginal players

Scott Boland was actually the second Indigenous Australian since Jason Gillespie to don the Baggy Green for the country‘s cricket team. The 32-year-old had been doing well in the domestic circuit for a long time, and he rightfully got a chance in the Boxing Day encounter.

Ashleigh Gardner, Faith Thomas, Dan Christian and D’Arcy Short are some of the other popular players from this group that have played for the country. Out of this, Dan Christian and D’Arcy Short belong to the Aboriginal Group, the same category that Scott Boland is part of.

After his stunning show in the Ashes, Scott Boland said that Aboriginals are doing well in other sports. He said that the likes of Ash Gardener, Dan Christian and D’Arcy Short are active at the moment. Hence, a few young Aboriginals could get involved in cricket.

Meanwhile, Australia is on a roll in the ongoing Ashes. The team leads 3-0 and there is a chance of white-wash. Scott Boland could play the next two games as well, even though Josh Hazlewood could get fit.
