On Day 5 of the ongoing Lord’s Test match, India needed to bat out a few hours so that they would be out of danger. However, they were rocked back early with the wicket of Rishabh Pant. Nevertheless, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami stitched an unlikely partnership and put India back in the game. With the ball, too, the duo was on fire. It is because of their efforts that the English openers entered the record books on Day 5 of the Lord’s Test.
Shami and Bumrah pull India out of a hole
With Rishabh Pant losing his wicket early, Team India was put in a spot of bother. The Indian tail is not popular for contributing much and hence, the focus had already made its way to the bowling innings.
However, the Indian tail wagged on Day 5 of the Lord’s Test match, much to the relief of the Indian camp. Shami and Bumrah remained unbeaten on 56 and 34 runs respectively as they helped India declare at 298-8. With this, the Virat Kohli-led side set a 272-run target for the Englishmen.
England’s chase started on a sour note
The conditions were overcast, and the Indian Team was showing energy on the field to make a match out of it. In line with this, England lost both their openers early, with Rory Burns conceding his wicket to Jasprit Bumrah in the very first over. Dominic Sibley then fell to Mohammed Shami. Apart from putting their team at risk, the English openers also achieved an unnecessary record on the final day.
English openers enter the record books
Both Rory Burns and Dominic Sibley got out for a duck, and hence, it became the first instance of both the England openers getting out for a duck in a home Test. It was the sixth occasion that both English openers had got out for a duck. However, the previous ones were away from home. The last time this happened was way back in 2005/06 when Marcus Trescothick and Andrew Strauss got out for zero at Faisalabad.
