“Dhoni will be there”, Twitter reacts as Saudi Arabian Government talked with IPL owners to set up the world’s richest T20 tournament in Saudi Arabia

The Age reports that Saudi Arabia is in talks with the BCCI and the owners of Indian Premier League franchises about launching a lucrative Twenty20 league. According to the article, the IPL teams have been in negotiations with Saudi Arabian government officials for the last year.

Multiple Twenty20 (T20) leagues have recently emerged in cricket, and soon a new event will join them. The Age reports that Saudi Arabia is working with IPL owners and the BCCI to create the wealthiest Twenty20 competition in the world. For the last year, government leaders and franchise owners have been talking about combining forces to create a lucrative new market.

At the moment, Indian players are not allowed to compete in any Twenty20 competitions held outside of India. In spite of this, the article said that they will be admitted to the league. Greg Barclay, head of the International Cricket Council, thinks the sport would go well in Saudi Arabia.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) and its members would need to accept the newly established cricket league before it could officially begin playing. In addition, even if the league does begin, the organizers will have an uphill battle in trying to persuade the national board to issue No Objection Certificates to its players.

Trent Boult and Martin Guptill are two recent instances of players who opted out of their national contracts in favour of playing for a franchise instead of for their country. There is a serious probability that the introduction of this league and potential future leagues would lead to an increase in similar incidents.

“If you look at other sports they’ve been involved in, cricket is something I imagine would be attractive to them,” Greg Barclay told the publication.
