“Virat Kohli led from the front, had determination to win every game” Rohit Sharma heaps praises on his predecessor

Rohit Sharma has taken over as India's new white ball skipper after Virat Kohli's sacking as ODI captain

The new Indian white ball skipper Rohit Sharma has heaped praises on his predecessor and the former Indian captain Virat Kohli for always leading from the front during his 5-year stint.

According to Rohit, the message from Virat to the dressing room was clear and straightforward that the team had to try and win every single game they play, no matter who they were playing against and where they were playing.

Rohit admits that the ICC trophy is something India couldn’t deliver despite the consistency in results outside the ICC tournaments, but he doesn’t think it was because of something wrong that they have been doing or there has been any sort of lack of effort by the team.

In the views of the 34-year old Mumbai batsman, who will now oversee India’s campaigns in the ICC tournaments in the next few years, the falure of India to win the ICC tournaments since 2013 is simply down to the fact that the team has not got that “extra inch” when neeed.

Rohit, who was a part of India’s last world triumph which was the ICC Champions trophy in 2013, insisted that he has not felt the team has lacked in its preparation in any way whatsoever since 2013. They have gone into every ICC tournament well prepared. It’s just that they have not gone that extra distance, which they want to go in future, but the focus will still be on the process than the end result.

The official website of the BCCI uploaded a video of Rohit’s first interview since being appointed as India’s full time white ball captain, where he also talked about his relationship with the outgoing skipper Virat Kohli who, he thinks, has left a great legacy behind him.

Rohit said he always enjoyed playing under Virat and still enjoys playing alongside and under him in different formats. Rohit and Virat will be playing under each other now, at different times as Virat is still the test captain of India, while Rohit is his deputy in the longest format.

Rohit Sharma not paying any attention to “outside talks”

Because of the way the leadership transition has happened between Virat and Rohit, there are speculations of a potential rift between these two great players going ahead, but Rohit doesn’t seem to be interested in all those “outside talks” as he is looking to focus on the job in hand.

For Rohit, winning ICC Championships going forward is the utmost important task as a leader. “Lot of World Cups are coming and India will be eyeing to do well in a lot of them. Our focus is on winning the championship,” Rohit Sharma said in his interview to BCCI’s official website.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
