Vinod Kambli names his fab 4 batsmen of all time, leaves out Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma

Vinod Kambli has picked the current Indian test captain Virat Kohli in his fab 4

The former Indian batsman Vinod Kambli has named his fab 4 batsmen of all time, and although he has picked three Indians in the list, he has left out one of India’s greatest top order test batsmen and the current Indian head coach Rahul Dravid. Kambli has also overlooked India’s Test vice-captain, Rohit Sharma.

Three Indian players whom Vinod Kambli has picked are Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli and he has added the former West Indies captain Sir Vivian Richards to the list to complete his fab 4. While all the four batsmen in Kambli’s fab 4 have got stellar records in their own rights, Dravid was someone who did a very tough job for India in test match cricket.

Dravid wasn’t an opening batsman, but batting at no. 3, there were a number of occasions when he had to walk in early and had to face the new ball in tricky conditions for a substantial length of time and despite that, his record in test match cricket, not only at home but also overseas, is world-class.

There is no doubt about the fact that India has produced players who have been more flamboyant than Dravid even in the longest format of the game and have taken the game away from the opposition very quickly on their day, but most of those players generally batted at no. 4 and 5. Dravid, on the other hand, batted at no. 3 for most parts of his career and scored the tough runs for India.

Vinod Kambli has picked three stroke makers in his fab 4

Vinod Kambli himself played quite a bit of cricket with Dravid and is well aware of the capability that Dravid possessed, but while picking his fab 4, Kambli seems to have tilted towards strokemakers, barring Sunil Gavaskar who is the only grafter in Kambli’s fab 4.

One overseas batsman that Kambli has picked in his fab 4 is Vivian Richards, who is regarded by many as the greatest batsman of all time, simply because of the way he dominated the bowlers in an era where the pitches were not always covered and the batsmen didn’t have the protection of helmets and other equipment.

The quality which made Sir Vivian Richards the most watchable batsman of his era was the fact that he batted at the same tempo in test match cricket and limited over cricket. While he was batting in test cricket, there was never an indication at any point that Richards was willing to let the bowlers dictate terms. It was always him who was dictating terms.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
