Here’s why Yuzvendra Chahal is not picked for 2021 T20 World Cup

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 15-man squad of the Indian cricket team for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in the United Arab Emirates and Oman. There were some big surprises yesterday. One of them was the exclusion of Yuzvendra Chahal, whom many fans consider one of the best leg-spinners in the world.

Yuzvendra Chahal plays for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League. He is the highest wicket-taker for the Bangalore-based franchise in IPL history. The right-arm leg-spinner made his T20I debut for the Indian cricket team in a match against the Zimbabwean cricket team in June 2016.

Yuzvendra Chahal became a main member of the Indian cricket team in the white-ball formats of the sport

Yuzvendra Chahal soon became one of the most reliable spin bowlers for the Indian cricket team. He and Kuldeep Yadav replaced experienced spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the team. Chahal impressed everyone by taking a six-wicket haul in a T20I match against the England cricket team in 2017.

Chahal has played 49 T20I matches so far in his career, scalping 63 wickets at a bowling average of 25.30. He has been a part of the Indian Premier League since 2011. However, the team management preferred Rahul Chahar over Chahal while selecting the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 squad.

We picked Rahul Chahar over Yuzi as we wanted someone who bowls fast: Chetan Sharma

Chief selector of the Indian cricket team Chetan Sharma mentioned that they had discussed Chahal’s name while selecting the squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. However, they decided against picking him because they had the option of Mumbai Indians’ leg-spinner Rahul Chahar who bowls a little faster than Chahal. Quite a few fans were surprised to see the name of Rahul in the squad because he has not played much international cricket. But Chahar has done exceptionally well for MI in the IPL.

“Yuzvendra Chahal’s name was discussed. But we picked Rahul Chahar over Yuzi as we wanted someone who bowls fast and gets pace off the pitch. He also gets the ball to grip through the surface,” Chetan Sharma said
