Former Indian cricket team opener Aakash Chopra recently analyzed Mumbai Indians’ performance in the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League. Chopra felt that the five-time champions can say goodbye to two players from their overseas department. He also felt they can release one Indian uncapped player.
Talking about the disastrous season that the Mumbai Indians had in 2022, the franchise started with eight losses in their first eight matches. They bounced back well and ended the season with four wins in six matches, but the Mumbai-based team finished last on the points table with eight points to their name.
MI have been a part of all the IPL seasons since 2008, and this was the first time they finished last on the standings. Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra discussed MI’s possible releases ahead of IPL 2023 and said:
“I think we have seen the last of Kieron Pollard. ₹6 crores will be released if they don’t retain him. I think they can let Murugan Ashwin (₹1.6 crore) go as well. I am not sure about Jaydev Unadkat (₹1.3 crore) but they can definitely say bye bye to Tymal Mills (₹1.5 crore).”

During the same video, Chopra added that in his view, the Mumbai Indians are a very one-dimensional team. They had all-rounders like Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya in the past, but this year, the team lacked quality all-rounders. Their batters could not bowl well, while the bowlers could not bat well.
With Jofra Archer likely to be available for the next season, Mumbai Indians will have one more option in the all-rounders’ department. Also, they can look to increase their budget and rope in someone like Ben Stokes for the next season. It will be interesting to see which players MI release ahead of the IPL 2023 Auction.
