Sydney Thunder Signs Up Two Top Indian Stars For The Upcoming WBBL Season

The 2021–22 Women’s Big Bash League season will start on 14th October 2021. Like the previous edition, the upcoming campaign will also include a few Indian cricketers. In a major development, Sydney Thunder signs up two top Indian stars for the upcoming WBBL season.

Sydney Thunder signs up two top Indian stars

Sydney Thunder has signed up Indian stars Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma for the upcoming season. The duo is currently in Australia, engaged in an international commitment. While Smriti has been part of the league with teams like Hobart Hurricanes and Brisbane Heat, it will be the first time that Deepti Sharma will be playing in the league.

Smriti said that it would be a great experience playing in an overseas league, while Deepti was excited about playing in WBBL. Sydney Thunder will start its first game of the season against Adelaide Strikers on October 16th.

Sydney coach explains the recruitment

Trevor Griffin, the Head Coach of the side, was excited about signing the Indian stars. He admitted that the two cricketers will help the team in their title defence.

Speaking about Smriti, Sydney Thunder coach Trevor Griffin said, “She’s world-class. I like that she keeps her game really simple; she just wants to score runs. I’m delighted to have her on board. And I have no doubt that she’ll prove to be a great addition to Thunder.”

About Deepti, he said, “While it’s disappointing not to be able to have Heather back, if you could choose any replacement for her, it would be Deepti – she’s also a star. She offers a lot with the bat – Deepti is a match-winner – and she also has the talent to bowl in the powerplay, during the middle of a match, or at the death. Deepti is a great addition to the Thunder, and I have no doubt she’ll go a long way to helping us in this year’s competition.”
