Crystal Palace vs Arsenal: Match Preview, Where To Watch, Details, Team News, Probable Playing XI, and Predictions

Crystal Palace vs Arsenal: On the opening weekend of the 2022–2023 Premier League season, a London derby will take place as Crystal Palace plays host to Arsenal at Selhurst Park on Friday evening.

Only a few months ago, Patrick Vieira’s team defeated the Gunners 3-0 in this matchup. Nevertheless, Mikel Arteta has worked to fill up the deficiencies in his Gunners XI throughout the busy summer.

Patrick Vieira slammed the turf at the Emirates in frustration when his side gave away two points in a 2-2 draw with Arsenal last season, but he was able to take four points out of a possible six against his former club, and he later saw his team dominate the Gunners in April.

The former Invincibles captain, Vieira, earned a nomination for the manager of the season after leading the Eagles to a 12th-place finish last season and advancing to the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Optimism is high around Selhurst Park under the direction of the Frenchman, and the Eagles are looking forward to continuing their success this year.

Cheick Doucoure and Malcolm Ebiowei are prepared to make their imprint on the English capital, and the end of pre-season was mainly good for Vieira’s team, even though it was a terrible blow to see Conor Gallagher return to Chelsea.

The Eagles come into this match having won their previous two preseason matches, one against Queens Park Rangers and the other against Montpellier HSC. The Eagles’ only losses throughout the exhibition phase came at the hands of Liverpool and Manchester United.

It is just what the doctor ordered for Crystal Palace to begin the new season at Selhurst Park, as they finished last season undefeated in their final six home games and astonishingly managed to keep clean sheets in each of their last five. This was not an easy accomplishment, as Arsenal, Manchester United, and Manchester City were all on the list of teams they faced during that stretch.

Fans will soon be able to get a taste of what transpired at Arsenal during the 2021-22 season when their All Or Nothing documentary is made available on Amazon Prime. This will include the memorable meeting that Mikel Arteta had at Selhurst Park.

While it can be said that the Gunners had a successful season because they qualified for continental competition in the form of the Europa League, there was a palpable sense of disappointment after their end-of-season collapse allowed Tottenham Hotspur to swoop in and nick the fourth and final Champions League spot. While it can be said that returning to continental competition in the form of the Europa League was a successful season for the Gunners.

However, if Arsenal‘s preseason is any indication, the Gunners will be a force to be reckoned with in the new season. The Gunners defeated their London rivals, Chelsea, by a score of 4-0 in Orlando, and then they defeated Sevilla by a score of 6-1 in the Emirates Cup.

Gabriel Jesus scored a hat-trick on that day and represents one of two major-money acquisitions from Manchester City this summer. Oleksandr Zinchenko is also reuniting with Mikel Arteta in North London, but the Gunners manager has urged fans and players alike not to get carried away with pre-season results.

Arsenal will kick off their new season with a London derby for the third year in a row. The Gunners cruised to a 3-0 victory at Fulham behind closed doors in 2020, while Brentford came out convincing 2-0 victors against Arteta’s side in their first Premier League encounter last season.

Crystal Palace vs Arsenal: Team News and Probable Playing XI

The goalkeeping ranks of Crystal Palace have suffered a couple of knocks during the preseason, with new goalkeeper Sam Johnstone nursing a quadriceps injury and likely missing the first game of the season, while veteran goalkeeper Jack Butland is unable to play due to a fractured hand.

Vicente Guaita is anticipated to be the final line of defence for the home team on Friday, as James McArthur and Michael Olise are slated to miss the game due to injuries to their groin and ankle, respectively, while James Tomkins is also out with a muscle issue.

Due to McArthur’s absence, Doucoure’s chances of making his first competitive start for the Eagles have increased, and the front three that consisted of Jordan Ayew, Wilfried Zaha, and Odsonne Edouard began against Montpellier and might do so again here.

Crystal Palace Probable Playing XI:

Guaita; Clyne, Andersen, Guehi, Mitchell; Schlupp, Doucoure, Eze; Ayew, Edouard, Zaha

Emile Smith Rowe is going to miss time due to a groin problem, while Fabio Vieira, Kieran Tierney, and Takehiro Tomiyasu have all been battling with minor injuries in pre-season but might still make the team nonetheless.

It would be surprising to see any one of the three start on Friday, so Ben White might very well resume his responsibilities at right-back. This would clear the way for William Saliba to finally make his debut in a competitive game alongside Gabriel Magalhaes in the middle of the defence.

Jesus and Zinchenko are also in line to make appearances in the starting lineup, and after being named Arsenal’s new captain, Martin Odegaard will take the field in his usual position as the number 10 player.

Match Predictions:

Because players like Conor Gallagher and Nuno Tavares will not take part in this match, Arteta is anticipating a very different matchup between the two teams on Friday.

But the Gunners have looked like a different beast in the preseason and have upped their pressing game tenfold, which should help them begin their Premier League season in a winning fashion. Palace will, of course, take major confidence from their showings against Arsenal in the previous season and their string of clean sheets at home.

Expect, Crystal Palace 1-3 Arsenal
