After all of the tensions and events that transpired in the 2012 edition of the Indian Premier League, IPL 2013 came in like a breath of fresh air. But the joy was not long-lived as yet again a spot-fixing case came to light and 3 players from the Rajasthan Royals were arrested. One thing that it brought along, a new winner of the tournament, in the form of the Mumbai Indians, who in the finals defeated the Chennai Super Kings, and got to their first tournament win ever, and it was Rohit Sharma leading the charge for them. So now let us have a look at some really intriguing numbers from the tournament.
Most Runs in IPL 2013:
‘Mr Cricket’, Michael Hussey in IPL 2013 went past every other batsman in the fray and grabbed the orange cap with 733 runs to his name in 17 matches. His closest competitor for the cap and position at the top was Chris Gayle who had scored 708 runs in 16 matches and could have potentially overtaken him had he gotten another match.
The players at number 3, 4 and 5 were far apart from those in the top 2. Virat Kohli, at number 3 had 634 runs in 16 matches, Suresh Raina, who was positioned at number 4 was behind Kohli by a healthy margin as he had only 548 runs in his account. Wrapping up the affairs of the top 5 was Shane Watson of the Rajasthan Royals who scored 543 runs in 16 matches.
Most Wickets in IPL 2013:
Dwayne Bravo rocked the stage with his beats and bowling, taking away the Purple Cap of the tournament with 32 wickets to his name. James Faulkner who was at the second position in the list of players with the most wickets in IPL 13, had taken 28 wickets in 16 matches.
The ‘Turbunator’ Harbhajan Singh, was the bowler who was in at 3 in this list, as he had taken 24 wickets in 19 matches, and he was followed closely by his teammate, Mitchell Johnson who had sent the same number of batsmen to the pavilion but was placed below because of the higher number of runs he had given. Vinay Kumar carried over his form from the earlier editions and proved to be a valuable asset for his team as he took 23 wickets.
Most Sixes in IPL 2013:
There was no stopping to Chris Gayle in yet another season of IPL from sending the ball sailing over the boundary, as the ‘Universe Boss’ hit 51 balls into the crowd in the 16 matches that he played in, bringing down hell on the bowlers. His national teammate, Keiron Pollard was the second entrant in, with 29 sixes to his name in 18 matches.
Rohit Sharma was one hit short of Pollard and was placed at the third position hence, and MS Dhoni who had 25 sixes in 18 matches, occupied the number 4 slot, which everyone had been asking him to, in the actual batting order. David Miller of the now renamed Kings XI Punjab was the player at number 5, having hit 24 sixes in total.
Most Fours in IPL 2013:
Michael Hussey made an appearance at the pole position twice in the same season of the same tournament, for different reasons though. He had hit 81 fours during the course of his stay on the crease and the next batsmen, Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid, were 17 fours behind Michael Hussey. Such was his impact and ability with the bat in hand.
Shane Watson, Dravid’s teammate was the batsman to hit the 4th highest number of fours in the tournament. Chris Gayle, made another appearance, this time for hitting the ball along the ground past the boundary ropes. Gayle en route to his total of 708 runs in 16 matches hit 57 fours in total, and his strike rate of 156.29 is representative of that.
Fastest Fifties in IPL 2013:
You cannot keep IPL and Chris Gayle apart. The ‘Universe Boss’ as his fans and fellow players like to call him, batting against the Pune Warriors India at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, en route to his score of 175 runs, smoked a 17 ball half-century. Keiron Pollard who was the player to hit the second-fastest half-century of the tournament was in with a 20 ball rampage.
Dwayne Smith, AB de Villiers and David Miller were the players rounding off the top 5 of the list of the players who hit the fastest half-centuries in IPL 2013. Smith had hit a half-century off 21 balls, de Villiers followed with a 23 ball fifty and at the last, but not the least was David Miller who hit his half-century in 24 balls.
