AB de Villiers is one of the most popular players in cricket history. He is famous by the name ‘Mr.360’. Fans gave him that nickname because he can play shots in all directions. Initially, he played for Delhi in IPL. However, in 2011, RCB signed de Villiers.
Since then, he has been an integral part of the team. AB de Villiers has formed a great partnership with skipper Kohli. Both batters have won RCB many matches. Ahead of IPL 2022 Mega Auction, RCB will most probably retain AB de Villiers. So, here are the five players they might not target if they retain him.
1. RCB might not target Shimron Hetmyer if they retain AB de Villiers
Shimron Hetmyer is a former RCB player. The Caribbean player is a hard-hitter. His role is a bit similar to AB de Villiers. When he was in RCB, team management could not include him in all games. Two overseas batters in the middle-order might not help RCB’s cause.
Hetmyer did well in IPL 2021. However, RCB might not go for him. They already have a player like AB de Villiers in the team. Also, they might retain Glenn Maxwell. So, they might avoid Hetmyer at the auction.
2. Eoin Morgan
Eoin Morgan is one of the most destructive batters in the world. However, RCB might not target him if they retain de Villiers. The reason being he will most likely get a similar role in the team. Also, Morgan might be an expensive buy. So, blocking funds for two players who almost play in same position might not be wise.
Morgan did not have a great first half of IPL 2021. He was the captain of KKR in the first half. However, he could not form a proper team combination. Since RCB might have enough strength in batting, they might not go for Morgan. Instead, an all-rounder could be a better pick.
3. Nicholas Pooran
Another player having similar kind of qualities is Nicholas Pooran. He bats in the middle order. Also, he is a left-hander like Morgan. Unfortunately, Pooran could not get going in first half of IPL 2021. He has the caliber to do well.
Somehow he could not get going in IPL 2021 for Punjab. Pooran will be a top pick in the mega auction. But RCB might not go for him. They might not prefer investing more funds in a similar category of player. An all-rounder or an opener could be RCB’s preference if they retain AB de Villiers.
4. RCB might not target David Miller if they retain AB de Villiers
David Miller is an excellent finisher. But even AB de Villiers plays the same role. In IPL 2021, de Villiers did this job multiple times. RCB have clarified they will play him in number four or five. So, they need someone who can bat in top order.
A team would prefer to have an all-rounder at six or seven. Hence, it will be tough to have Miller in the XI regularly. Also, RCB may need overseas stars in their bowling unit. The pitch in Bengaluru is tough for bowlers. Thus, RCB might not look for an additional batter.
Another batter who has great records in middle order is Mahmudullah. He has done well for Bangladesh. However, RCB might not look for his services if they retain AB de Villiers. Mahmudullah could be a great asset for another franchise. He has leadership experience also.
It will be interesting to see if Mahmudullah gets his first IPL contract in 2022. Chances are high because there will be ten teams. However, RCB might not go for him. Thus, these are the five players RCB might not target if they retain AB de Villiers.
