The hard-hitting Indian women’s player Kiran Navgire, who scored 69 runs in just 34 balls in Velocity’s second game of women’s T20 challenge yesterday, has revealed that the six that MS Dhoni hit in the final of ODI World Cup 2011 to win the World Cup for India is inspiring her till today and it’s because of that six that she started her cricketing journey.
Navgire hadn’t got the opportunity to bat in Velocity’s first game against Supernovas, but she was promoted in the batting order in the second game against the Trailblazers and she started her innings with a six off the very first ball. It was Bangladeshi off-spinner Salma Khatun who was bowling to Navgire and the very first ball, which was slightly overpitched, was slog-swept with immense power into the stands.
Velocity was chasing a huge total of 191 and boundaries were required, but for a young player to come out and straightaway hit a reputed overseas bowler out of the ground, it took everyone by surprise. Navgire just went from strength to strength after that, as she hit a total 5 sixes during her innings and batted at a strike rate of over 200.
Kiran Navgire was interviewed by her teammate Yastika Bhatia
Talking to her teammate Yastika Bhatia for the official website of IPL, Kiran Navgire revealed that she also wants to hit big sixes like Dhoni and if the ball is on her radar, she just looks to whack it out of the ground. If the bowlers bowl out of her range, she looks to rotate the strike, but she always intends to make sure that she doesn’t play too many dot balls.
Despite Navgire’s knock of 69 yesterday, Velocity lost the game against Trailblazers by 16 runs. However, since they had beaten the Supernovas in their first game and they had a better Net Run Rate (NRR) than the Trailblazers, they qualified to the final where they will face the Supernovas again.
