Australian cricket team’s star fast bowler Mitchell Starc and his wife Alyssa Healy recently won big at the annual Australian Cricket Awards. Starc received the prestigious Allan Border Medal for being the best male cricketer of the year, whereas his wife Healy was adjudged the best Women’s ODI player of the year.
Starc and Healy are one of the few couples in international cricket history. Both have achieved a lot of success over the last two years. While Healy was a part of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup-winning team of Australia, her husband Starc was a member of the Australian T20 World Cup 2021-winning squad.
The winners of the Australian cricket awards were announced recently during the lunch break on Day 3 of the Women’s Test match. The two biggest awards up for grabs were the Allan Border Medal and the Belinda Clark Award. Starc won the Allan Border Medal and said:
“I’m very thankful for my support networks and in particular Alyssa, to play cricket at the highest level be there to support me as well, I can’t thank her enough for that. I’ve got a wife that plays at the highest level.”
Alyssa Healy, Mitchell Starc won the same award in different categories
While Alyssa Healy did not win the Belinda Clark award, she won the Women’s ODI Player of the Year. In the men’s category, Mitchell Starc won that prize. Thus, the duo set couple goals by winning these prizes. Speaking of the Belinda Clark award now, Asheligh Gardener took the trophy home for her excellent performances over the last 12 months.
Travis Head won the Men’s Test player of the year, whereas Beth Mooney won the prize for the Women’s T20 player of the year. Fans should note that there was a voting system for this award ceremony. Players, media representatives and umpires decided which players should win the awards.
According to reports, Mitchell Marsh, who won the Men’s T20 player of the year, missed out on the Allan Border Medal because of just one vote. Marsh played an instrumental role in the Australian cricket team’s maiden ICC T20 World Cup win last year in the UAE.
