IPL 2020: Five Players with most wins as IPL captain

After waiting for more than five months, the biggest T20 league is finally coming back on our TV screens. The 13th season of the IPL starts on 19th September with the defending champions Mumbai Indians taking on Chennai Super Kings in the IPL opener. Both these teams who starting this year’s IPL are the most successful teams in the history of the IPL.

One of the reasons as to why they are so successful is the captaincy. Both MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma have been great captains which have helped their respective teams. A good captain is really important especially in the shortest format with the game moving so fast. So, on that note let’s have a look at five players with the most wins as IPL captain.

5. Adam Gilchrist – 35 wins

Adam Gilchrist is famously known for leading the Deccan Chargers to the IPL title in the second season of the IPL. His captaincy was extremely instrumental in changing the fortunes of their team as they were at the bottom of the points table in the first season.

Gilchrist also captained KXIP towards the end of his IPL career. He captained for a total of 74 matches out of which they won 35 which is a decent record as a captain. You also have to factor in that it is difficult being an overseas captain in the IPL because if you are not performing then your place comes under question.

4. Virat Kohli – 49 wins

Virat Kohli has been with Royal Challengers Bangalore from the first season and that is the only franchise he has captained in the IPL. He has captained RCB in 110 games out of which 49 are wins and 55 are losses. Many times, Kohli has been criticized for his captaincy as he keeps changing the XI far too many times in a season.

All the RCB fans are hoping that Virat Kohli gets it right this year and finally he can lead them to an IPL trophy.

3. Rohit Sharma – 60 wins

Rohit Sharma is the most successful captain in the history of the IPL if we consider the number of trophies he has won as a captain. In the last seven years, he has led Mumbai Indians to four titles in every alternate year which is a phenomenal achievement.

The Indian vice-captain has captained MI in 104 matches and they have won 60 out of them which is a great win percentage. Rohit Sharma will be aiming to get the second most win as IPL captain at the end of this season.

2. Gautam Gambhir – 71 wins

Gautam Gambhir first captained Delhi Daredevils in the IPL but he is known for captaining Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL titles. KKR was in trouble after three below-par seasons and they bought in Gambhir as the skipper in 2011.

In 2012 and 2014, Gambhir repaid all the faith shown in him by winning two titles for KKR. Gambhir has captained in 129 IPL games and his team has won 71 out of them which is why he is second on this list.

1. MS Dhoni – 105 wins

MS Dhoni is the only captain in the history of the IPL who has managed to register over 100 wins. He has the highest win percentage as captain with a minimum of 50 matches. His captaincy is one of the main reasons as to why CSK has been so successful in the tournament.

Chennai Super Kings have qualified for the playoffs in each and every season of the IPL which is a huge achievement. Every year they just keep producing those results which other teams don’t. There is no doubt that MS Dhoni is one of the best captains if not the best in the history of the IPL.
