Five Batsmen who got run out on 99 in ODI Cricket History

Scoring a century is always a special feeling for any batsman. All the batsmen who go out to bat aim to score as many runs as possible and more importantly score a century. In cricket, a century is a milestone that is given a lot of importance, and so everybody wants to reach that milestone. If there is any score batsmen would hate getting out on, then it is 99.

The reason for that would be that the batsman is set as he is in good nick, and he is just one short of a huge milestone. The worst would be if a batsman gets run out on 99. That would be the worst nightmare as the batsman was almost there but couldn’t reach the milestone due to a silly mistake. So, let us have a look at the five batsmen who have got run out on 99 in ODI cricket history.

5. Graeme Smith – 99 vs Sri Lanka

Graeme Smith who has been the most successful captain of the South African team is one of the batsmen who has been run out on 99 in an ODI. South Africa was playing against Sri Lanka in the 2nd ODI of a five-match ODI series in 2002 and South Africa was batting first.

Smith as usual opened the innings and was on 99 off 106 balls when he got run out. The strange thing about that South African innings was three batsmen got run out in that innings. South Africa scored over 300 and won that game, but Smith couldn’t get his century.

4. Sanath Jayasuriya – 99 vs England

Another left-handed opening batsman fell short of a hundred by being run out on 99. Sri Lanka was up against England in a tri-series consisting of Australia as well in 2003. England batted first and scored 279-7 in their 50 overs.

Chasing 280, Sanath Jayasuriya was at his usual best as he scored 99 off just 83 balls with nine fours and two sixes. Unfortunately, he got run out on 99, and he not only missed a century but possibly a Sri Lanka win as they lost the game by 19 runs.

3. Adam Gilchrist – 99 vs Sri Lanka

Getting run out on 99 seems to be a normal thing for a left-handed opening batsman as one more player joins the list. Adam Gilchrist from Australia has also been run out on 99 against Sri Lanka. Australia was up against Sri Lanka in the 2003 World Cup.

Australia batted first and Gilchrist was on fire as he scored 99 off just 88 balls with 14 fours and 2 sixes. He was run out on 99 by Chaminda Vaas. Australia scored more than 300 and went on to win the game easily, but Gilchrist missed a World Cup century.

2. Eoin Morgan – 99 vs Scotland

The current England white-ball captain missed out on a century while playing for Ireland against Scotland. Eoin Morgan was batting at No.3 for Ireland against Scotland in the European Cricket Championship in 2006.

Ireland was batting first and Morgan scored 99 off 134 balls before he was run out. Ireland scored 240 but still managed to win the game. Morgan, who has 14 ODI hundreds, missed out on an ODI hundred for Ireland.

1. Sachin Tendulkar – 99 vs South Africa

Sachin Tendulkar has a special relationship with the 90s, as he has been dismissed a lot of times in the nervous nineties. He could have got more than 100 centuries if he had avoided that. He has been dismissed in all kinds of ways in the 90s, and run out is one of them.

The touring Indian team was batting first against South Africa in 2007 and Tendulkar was at his usual best as he scored 99 off 143 balls with 12 fours. He was looking good for another century when he got run out by Morne Van Wyk and Mark Boucher. If he could have completed one more run, today he would have had 101 centuries. India lost the game as South Africa chased down the score in the last over.
