“I have watched both seasons of Mirzapur, waiting for third season,” says New Zealand captain Kane Williamson

Kane Williamson made the revelation in a video chat with the Indian actor Manoj Bajpayee

The New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has revealed that he has watched both seasons of the Indian web series Mirzapur which is based on the local background of Uttar Pradesh. It’s a super hit web series of Amazon Prime that features the likes of Pankaj Tripathi and Ali Fazal.

Kane Williamson was recently in a video chat with Manoj Bajpayee, who is also one of the actors contracted with Amazon Prime. The video chat was recorded on the day when it was announced that Amazon Prime will be telecasting the home matches of New Zealand going ahead.

Quite a few New Zealand cricketers were interviewed by Amazon Prime on the day of the announcement, and a video chat was also organised between Williamson and Bajpayee, where Bajpayee asked the Kiwi skipper some interesting questions.

Kane Williamson already knew Manoj Bajpayee played a lead role in “The Family man”

The viewers must be surprised to find out that Williamson already knew Bajpayee was the actor of another famous Indian web series, “The Family man”. In fact, Williamson greeted Bajpayee at the start of the video chat saying, “Family man, how are you?”.

Williamson, however, didn’t go with “The Family man” when he was asked to name his favorite Amazon Prime show. The classy right-hander, who has only recently been retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad for a hefty sum of 14 crore INR, said that Mirzapur is his favorite among all the shows that he has watched on Amazon Prime so far.

According to Williamson, he has liked both the seasons of Mirzapur so much that he is desperately waiting for the third season of the show and will watch it too, whenever it gets released.

It’s not just strange, but also hard to believe that a foreign international cricketer like Williamson has loved watching Mirzapur, which is a show entirely based on the cultural background of semi-urban India.

With Amazon Prime getting the broadcasting rights for New Zealand home games, it might be the start of the streaming apps getting into cricket broadcasting full time, as Amazon Prime is also expected to be one of the contenders to buy the next IPL broadcasting rights.

Generally, it’s the television networks who have had the broadcasting rights of the home games of big countries so far, including Star Sports in India, Sky Sports in England and Fox Sports in Australia, but with the landscape changing now, the streaming apps are getting into the broadcasting business as well, and they might just become more prominent in future.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
