Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has backed Suryakumar Yadav to do good in the ODIs. He said that he would want to promote him as a dedicated T20 batter. The cricketer-turned-commentator suggested him to keep things simple in the 50-over format.
“I would like to promote him as a dedicated T20 batter but that is my personal view,” says Sanjay Manjrekar on Suryakumar Yadav
Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav has hogged the headlines for his heroics in T20 cricket. He is a short span of time has developed himself into one of the most talked about batters in Indian Cricket with his heroics.
Ever since he made his debut for India, he has made a vital contribution in every match he has played. While there’s no doubt about his ability in the shortest format of the game, he’s yet to make a mark in ODIs as he has so far failed to get going in the format.
The batter has found it difficult to find his feet in the ODIs for some reason. He’s struggling to score runs as well. He bagged three consecutive golden ducks against Australia earlier which worsen the case for him more in the 50-over format.
Suryakumar Yadav struggling to get going in the ODIs have seen quite a few fans and pundits criticising him as in the 23 games so far, he averages just 24.04 and has amassed just 433 runs.
With ODI World Cup 2023 around the corner, there has been a lot of scrutiny about Suryakumar Yadav’s place in the side. But Sanjay Manjrekar feels that the batter has the ability to perform in 50-over cricket as well and said that he’s not a child and that ODI will hamper his T20 game. He said:
“I would like to promote him as a dedicated T20 batter but that is my personal view. It is a very personal thing because if you keep giving him chances in 50-over cricket, Suryakumar Yadav has the ability to perform in 50-over cricket as well
“I believe because he is not a 20-year-old player and the level at which his T20 game has gone, a little complication can come in his game if you play him in 50-over cricket.”
“I would want to keep life simple for him,” says Sanjay Manjrekar on Suryakumar Yadav
Sanjay Manjrekar further went on to say that Suryakumar Yadav should keep things simple and said that it shouldn’t be the case of bad thinking or the worst decision if he gets selected in the ODI team.
“When he played 50-over matches for India, when he got dismissed thrice off the first ball, it took him some time to regain his T20 form as well. He got derailed slightly. So I would want to keep life simple for him
“However, if any selector thinks that he needs Suryakumar Yadav’s ability even in 50 overs, it will also not be a wrong decision or bad thinking.”
