Farokh Engineer explains why it is wrong to blame Shastri and team for cancelling 5th Test

Former Indian cricketer Farokh Engineer has come out in defense of the current Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli and the head coach of the Indian cricket team Ravi Shastri for going for a book launch event just two days prior to the fourth game of the ICC World Test Championship series against the England cricket team at Kennington Oval in London.

Many fans would have known by now that the fifth match of the ICC World Test Championship series between the England cricket team and the Indian cricket team got postponed because the visitors were unable to field a playing XI for the Old Trafford Test match. The reason behind that was the Indian cricket team did not have the physios available. Both physios were away due to COVID-19 concerns.

Ravi Shastri had tested positive for COVID-19 along with two Indian coaches

During the fourth Test match of the ICC World Test Championship series between the England cricket team and the Indian cricket team, news emerged that the head coach of the Indian cricket team Ravi Shastri had contracted COVID-19. Soon after that, the bowling coach of the Indian cricket team Bharat Arun and the fielding coach of the team R Sridhar also tested positive.

The Indian cricket team completed the fourth Test match in London and then headed to Manchester for the final Test match. Although some reports claimed that the Test match in Manchester was on, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on the morning of that Test that the match will not happen.

What Farokh Engineer had to say about this development

Some fans blamed the coach and team for attending the book launch event of Shastri’s book, titled ‘Stargazing: The Players in My Life’ on August 31. However, in an interview with Sports Tak, Farokh Engineer said:

“People are blaming Ravi Shastri for it. He has done wonders for Indian cricket. You can’t blame them for going to a book launch. People keep coming to us for a selfie, and all the time you can’t say no. Ravi and Virat must have done the same thing, or shaked hands with people. But how would they know if someone is Covid positive? So you can’t really blame Ravi and Virat, although I believe a lot of blame is being laid on him.”
