Explained: Why Is Shardul Thakur Called As ‘Lord’?

Shardul Thakur is the latest sensation in the Indian Cricket Team. After coming into the team as a pure pacer, Shardul is now a potential bowling all-rounder for Team India. He is also a fan-favourite and enjoys massive engagement on social media. Much of this is due to his nickname – Lord. In this article, we tell you the exact reason why Shardul Thakur is called as ‘Lord’.

The newest all-rounder for India

A seam-bowling all-rounder is one player attribute the Indian Team has always struggled to find. While Hardik Pandya filled the role to an extent, injuries have not allowed him to bowl a lot. This is where Shardul Thakur has stepped up in recent months.

Be in the Gabba Test or the Oval Test, Shardul has shown signs of being an all-rounder material for the team. His shots ooze class and Shardul’s fearlessness has added an edge to his batting. At the same time, the Mumbai cricketer’s bowling abilities have also improved.

Shardul Thakur is called as ‘Lord’

Every time Shardul Thakur makes his way to the XI, and whenever he delivers a good performance, several memes are made referring to Shardul as the ‘Lord’. While it was restricted to fans until recently, former players like Virender Sehwag and Wasim Jaffer have also started using the nickname now.

It all started due to Shardul’s ability to chip in with performances that changed the direction of the game. On the tour to Australia last year, Shardul took the wicket of Steve Smith, who had hit two consecutive centuries. He also took the scalp of Moises Henriques and gave him a stare, which triggered many ‘Lord’ memes.

At the Gabba Test, when almost the entire batting order failed, Shardul turned up with a match-saving 67. He also took four wickets, later on, proving to be a thorn for the Aussies. In the England limited-overs series earlier in 2021, he made a habit of breaking partnerships, that too twice in the same over. All of them gave him a ‘super hero’ image, which contributed to the nickname of ‘Lord’. He further re-iterated with a twin-fifty performance at the Oval Test.
