“Do you want me and Shikhar Dhawan out?” Rohit Sharma asks the reporter a witty counter question

Rohit Sharma was addressing his first official press conference after becoming the white ball captain of India

Rohit Sharma is someone who is known for his witty answers in the press conferences and he came up with another witty answer today while attending his first ever press conference as the white ball captain of India. Rohit couldn’t take part in the ODI series against South Africa and it was KL Rahul who stood in as captain there in Rohit’s absence.

The Indian captain is, however, fit now and is ready to take charge of India’s white ball cricket for the next two years. He was addressing the reporters on the eve of the first ODI against West Indies.

When Rohit was asked by a reporter if the young Indian players will be given opportunities in future, particuarly in the top 3 positions, he responded to that sarcastically saying if they want him and Shikhar Dhawan to be dropped from the Indian XI right now and the youngsters to be given opportunities on place of players who are already doing a great job for the team.

What Rohit meant with his answer was that India doesn’t need any change at the top of the order at all because the top 3 players currently, including himself as well, are quite established and are delivering the goods for the team.

According to Rohit, the youngsters are there in the set-up and if the team needs them, they will get their opportunities in future, but there is no need for a forced change at the top right now.

India doesn’t need to change their template of playing ODI cricket: Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma also insisted that India doesn’t need to change their template of playing ODI cricket just because they lost a series in South Africa. India has played some consistent cricket in the ODI format of the game in the last few years and the template of their game will remain the same.

Since the time Rohit has become the captain, he has put his emphasis on a couple of things, one of them is the middle order batting. In the crunch games of the last two ODI World tournaments, India’s top order has collapsed and the middle order has failed to step up to the plate.

Rohit, in his first interview after becoming the captain, had said that the middle order should be ready for a 5/3 kind of score in all the time because it might happen in a big game. It remains to be seen how India approaches ODI cricket from here on under Rohit’s captaincy as they build up to the ODI World Cup 2023.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
