5 Teams that might target Chris Morris in IPL Auction 2021

Chris Morris has been a reliable all-rounder for whichever teams he has played in the IPL. He was bought by RCB for INR 10 crores. Having a poor season with the bat last year where he scored only 34 runs, Morris was excellent with the ball.

The all-rounder picked up 11 wickets in 9 games at a brilliant economy of 6.63. however, he was unbelievably released by RCB ahead of IPL 2021 season. Here are 5 teams that would like to have Chris Morris in their ranks.

1. Mumbai Indians

Defending champions Mumbai Indians won their fifth IPL title last year and have done an amazing job of retaining almost all of their crucial players. Having already had a settled XI, one place where MI could look for reinforcements is the fast bowling department.

Although MI have Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult, they struggled to find a third quick who could perform consistently. Thus they have released James Pattinson, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Lasith Malinga and Mitchell McClenaghan.

This makes a perfect place for Chris Morris as the third seamer in the stellar playing XI of MI. With quality bowling, Morris also provides big-hitting ability down the order. Thus he would be a perfect buy for MI in the IPL 2021 auction.

2. Kings XI Punjab

KXIP had a horrible start to their IPL 2020 season, losing 6 of their first 7 games. They won their next five games on the trot, but couldn’t find a place in the playoffs. One of the main problems was a lack of finisher with the bat and quality death bowling.

Chris Morris can fulfil the role what likes of Sheldon Cottrell and Chris Jordan couldn’t perform. He can be the ideal partner to the likes of Mohammed Shami and could also be the finisher KXIP have been missing.

With the highest purse of INR 53.20 crores remaining and 5 overseas slots available, KXIP are front-runners to seal the Chris Morris deal in the IPL 2021 auction.

3. Chennai Super Kings

CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs last season, the first time it has ever happened in their IPL history. They were poor with the bat, but one of the main problems they had was quality fast bowling.

While they had the likes of Dwayne Bravo, Sam Curran and Deepak Chahar, they didn’t have someone who could take wickets regularly and could also be economical. This is where Chris Morris fits the bill for CSK.

Morris could easily be the strike bowler for the three-time IPL champions and also could help Ravindra Jadeja in finishing off CSK’s innings with the bat. But CSK has only one overseas slot available. Thus it will be interesting to see if they go for Chris Morris in the IPL 2021 auction.

4. Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals had released Chris Morris after the IPL 2019 season. However, last season they dearly missed his absence as they not only lacked a proper finisher but also needed depth in their bowling.

Morris’ presence could aid the likes of Kagiso Tabada and Anrich Nortje. He could also allow Marcus Soinis to open the innings for DC since Morris can provide lusty blows down the order.

DC have two overseas slots available and INR 12.90 crores left in their kitty. With all-rounders like Chris Woakes available, it will be interesting to see if they add Chris Morris to their roaster ahead of IPL 2021.

5. Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals have some fantastic overseas players like Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer in their ranks. However, they have struggled in the fast bowling department as Archer has been the lone player who has caused problems for the opposition.

The likes of Tom Curran couldn’t quite create the impact required and thus has been released. This makes perfect sense for RR to go after Chris Morris as he will provide some support to Archer in RR’s pace attack.

Moreover, he could provide depth to the RR batting and let Ben Stokes continue to open the batting. RR has the third-highest purse with INR 34.85 crores left and 3 overseas slots available. Thus they might fancy themselves going for Chris Morris in IPL 2021 auction.
