4 England Players Who Were Part Of Previous Ashes But Are Not In The Squad Currently

Test cricket has not been dear to the English Team for a while now. While they have been succeeding in the shorter formats, the English Team has a couple of weaknesses in the five-day format. This is despite the presence of players like Joe Root and James Anderson. The management has been trying a lot of options and there are also absentees due to injuries. If not for Ben Stokes’ heroics, it would have been more embarrassing for the team in the 2019 Ashes. In the ongoing tournament, too, England has gotten off to a terrible start. On that note, in this article, we take a look at four England players who were part of the previous Ashes but are not in the squad for the ongoing Ashes.

1) Jason Roy

Jason Roy is one of the England players who were part of the previous Ashes but are not in the squad for the ongoing Ashes. The opening has been a problem for the English Test squad for a while now. After his good show in the 2019 World Cup, Roy was drafted into the Test squad.

The opener played four games but could manage only 110 runs at a poor average of 13.75. After that series, Roy has not been able to find a place back in the red-ball setup. However, he still is one of the primary opening options for England in the shorter formats.

2) Jofra Archer

Jofra Archer has not played an international game since March this year. Injuries have been a problem for the pacer, and it has been affecting him for far too long now. He missed IPL 2021 and most importantly, the 2021 T20 World Cup as well. Now, he is not part of the Ashes too.

The pacer did well in the 2019 Ashes. He played four games and collected 22 wickets at an average of 20.27. Jofra would have been really useful for England in the Australian conditions. He would have added some much-needed depth in the batting department, as well.

3) Sam Curran

Sam Curran had to leave the UAE leg of IPL 2021 due to an injury. He also missed the 2021 T20 World Cup due to the same. After suffering a stress fracture in his lower back, Curran was also not considered for the Ashes in Australia.

Had he been available, Curran would have been an automatic choice. The England Team does not have too many left-arm seam options, and being an all-rounder, Curran would have added a lot of depth to the team. In the 2019 Ashes, Curran played just one game and took three wickets in them.

4) Joe Denly

Joe Denly is also one of the England players who were part of the previous Ashes but are not in the squad for the ongoing Ashes. Denly was an important part of the English Team in 2019. He played in all five encounters and scored a total of 312 runs at an average of 31.20. Denly scored three half-centuries in that tournament. He also bowled a bit of his leg-spin but was not able to pick up a wicket.

Denly last played an international game in 2020. He has not played a Test since the game against West Indies at Southampton in July 2020. The inconsistent form has been the main reason for his exclusion from the Ashes squad. However, he still has an opportunity to get back into the team. The likes of Rory Burns are struggling and Denly could get a chance in the future competitions.
