SAT20 league auction: List of players sold to Joburg Super Kings (sister franchise of CSK)

Faf du Plessis will captain Joburg Super Kings in the first edition of SAT20 league

The philosophy of Joburg Super Kings in the SAT20 league auction was pretty much the same as the philosophy of its parent franchise CSK. JSK mostly looked to buy utility players in the SAT20 league auction yesterday, rather than buying the flashy, big names.

The only much sought-after player that the Joburg Super Kings bought was the English batsman Harry Brook, but other than Brook, they focused on buying reliable domestic South African batsmen like Janeman Malan and Reeza Hendricks who are likely to solidify the top order along with the captain Faf du Plessis.

There are a couple of shortcomings in the squad that the Joburg Super Kings have assembled in the SAT20 auction. They have only one left-handed batting option in the top 6, which is Leus du Plooy. Du Plooy is a dangerous player, but having just one left-hander in the top 6 is not very wise, as the left-handers can sometimes be very important during the course of a T20 game to counter the spin match-ups.

The Super Kings also didn’t show a lot of interest in buying a lot of local spinners. They already had a world-class T20 spinner in their ranks in the form of Maheesh Theekshana  whom they had signed before the auction itself, but other than Theekshana, the Super Kings bought just one local spinner Caleb Saleka who is a 19-year-old inexperienced bowler.

Super Kings’ most expensive player in the auction, apart from the players that they had signed pre-auction, was the middle order batsman Donavon Ferreira whom they bought at a whopping sum of 5.5 million Rand, which is close to 2.5 crore INR.

Joburg Super Kings had signed 5 players pre-auction

Before getting into the auction, Joburg Super Kings had signed Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, Romario Shepherd, Maheesh Theekshana, and the young South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee, but Moeen withdrew at the last moment because of his commitments in the UAE T20 league.

If Moeen was there, the Super Kings wouldn’t just have another spin option in the squad, they would also have another left-handed batting option.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
