3 Selection Errors Made By India For The 2021 T20 World Cup

Team India is almost out of the ongoing T20 World Cup. For a team that was considered the favourites and also had a relatively easier group to tackle, such a poor performance was not expected. In both the games so far, the batsmen were out of form, and the bowlers hardly put up a fight. While India lost to Pakistan by ten wickets, they lost the game to New Zealand by eight wickets. With this, it is almost impossible for India to now reach the semi-finals of the competition. In this article, we take a look at three selection errors made by India for the 2021 T20 World Cup.

1) Selecting an out of form Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Selecting an out of form Bhuvneshwar Kumar is one of the selection errors made by India for the 2021 T20 World Cup. This decision has backfired, with Bhuvi not being able to do well in the game against Pakistan. He was later dropped for the match versus New Zealand.

Yes, Bhuvi is an experienced customer, but his form and fitness have been wayward in the last few years. In the past, he was consistently doing well in the IPL but in recent seasons, the pacer has not been able to do that. Hence, Team India might have been better served by an in-form swing bowler like Deepak Chahar.

2) Picking an unfit and out of form Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya has struggled for form and fitness in recent months. Hence, only based on reputation, he was picked despite there being no clarity regarding his bowling.

Hardik came into the scene as a pace-bowling all-rounder and later, he clicked as a power-hitter. With the player not justifying both the roles, the selectors could have dropped him. Against both Pakistan and New Zealand, Hardik had a chance to show his skills, but he failed.

3) Choosing Rahul Chahar over Yuzvendra Chahal

Against both Pakistan and New Zealand, India needed a spinner who had the ability to pick wickets in the middle-overs. Varun CV was picked in the XI, but he could not make an impact. Having done well in IPL, his selection was justified.

However, despite being poor in IPL and Yuzvendra Chahal being in top form, the selectors stuck with the decision of selecting Rahul Chahar. Rahul is yet to get a place in the XI but in his place, Chahal might have been a better fit.
